Top Spring 2011 Collections part. 3

1.-Prada:
Miuccia can do no wrong. However sometimes collections for Prada are better and sometimes the ones for Miu Miu are, sometimes both. This season the show was a mindblowing experience, supposedly a minimalist show; it was inspired in colonial-baroque art with cherubins and classic ornaments printed on dresses, but also the Jazz Age sending out the models in short 30's hairdos with bananas and monkeys printed on the clothes and what look like a club illustration from that era. As elaborate as all this sounds, it was a minimal collection, there weren't a lot of layers and accesories, she's genius.

2.-Rodarte:
I could have keep on loving Rodarte's demi-couture techniques for many years to come, I'm a die hard fan and would keep on loving them no matter what (that's why tis top isn't very objectuive at all). But I do understand that a growing bussiness like hers couldn't just rely in the few gowns and handmade sweaters that have produed. This was a radical change for the label, as always inspired by California. The collection had a more wearable elaboration with: tons of skirts, long and short with one side open, great very high-waisted trousers, and beautiful dresses that had structure in one half and softness (draping) in the other to balance things up. One fabric that looked similar to tree bark stood out for me. It-s a very nice understandable step for the brand and I can-t wait to see what's next.

3.-Haider Ackermann:
I have followed the work of Haider for quite a few time and it's always among my favorite. His roughness and workmanship of leather creates and unique vision in the industry but doesn't make it less feminine. This time the jewel like hues and fluid textiles helped him deliver one of his best works yet. The silhouette was the classic tight to the body with the exception of puffy bloomer shorts and the trail of some gowns, it also had the usual draped pieces that are almost a little too revealing but at the same time very avant-garde. This was a feast for your eyes, each outfit a lot more visually fascinating than the last.

4.-Proenza Schouler:
These guys have become in my book, the experts in creating cool. I could write a lot more, but the way to get it it's to look closely at their work. A huge range of garments were presented, and although the collection achieved to show more "polished" looks, it still was fresh, young and desireable. I love them.

5.- Marni:
Let's face it, New York has a lot of shows that kind of look alike. But since it's clothes and fashion you checked them out anyway, and by the first half of Milan shows it gets a little boring. Then comes Marni and you feel the excitemen again. The collection was fun as always, colorful and had a lot of prints, but also sportgear inspired pieces like short trunks and long tops with stripes in matching color, each girl had kind of an aviator cap that completed the whole feel, less ladylike than in the past.

6.-Balenciaga:
Nicolas Ghuèsquiere presented the most urban collection yet to the house he is in charge of. That in no case meant less luxury, just that inspiration clearly came from punk and rock. Houndstooth was stretched into a big motif that covered coats, square long vests and skirts. Then short leather jackets were paired with long blouses and ankle length black pants with flat black shoes. It was the most masculine show I could think of from Balenciaga, but the result was intriguing and very well accomplished.

7.-Jil Sander:

Raf Simons is in a good place at Jil Sander, the last collection was interesting, but this time he decided to use bright colors, kind of his thing and the result was amazing. Puffy long skirts with simple white tees where the first to come out, then some long dresses with round puffy skirts and last separates, anoraks, jackets, trousers and more skirts with long coats. Imagine all of this pieces in the most basic hues, yellow, tangerine, grape, raspberry, and a vibrant oversized flower print. Raf Simons said he inspired in couture as a response to minimalism, and the silhouettes were somewhere in that level, but it still was clean look, where less is more.

8.-Lanvin:

Here is where all I write gets less formal and it's just pure love, look at the pictures above and everyone can immediately get the appeal of the clothes. The show was as summery and feminine as Lanvin can get, but it was still strong and minimal, all of the embroidery was almost gone. The textures and the color palette had a wide range but overall let's say he did tan, nude, brown, beige, red, raspberry, midnight blue and some neon hues with black. That's all...

9.-Rick Owens:

Everyone said this show was all about maturity and restraint, it's true. Rick Owens a famous designer for the younger fashion crowd has proven his aesthetic season after season, but this show was much needed, the models came out in a simpler hair do and makeup letting you really notice the clothes. A lot of long skirts and dresses also came in less intricate silhouettes, but the necklines and details in each garment could tell you it was signature Owens.

10.-Junya Watanabe:

He made an essay out of nautical stripes, along with printed marine motifs and complementary straw hats. The collection had great wearable pieces, something hard to find sometimes in Junya's conceptual shows, but it never demeaned the overall strength of the show. It was truly creative since stripes have been everywhere and almost all has been already shown, but the way he played with all the different lengths and layers left room for interpretation, some even assumed it was also jail uniform inspired.

I'll start backwards as I always do in a set of 5 this time:

11.- Celine:
There's no doubt that Phoebe has in very few seasons consolidated her concept as a general trend among the whole industry. Her influence is everywhere and this collection has the strength to keep the public intrigued, you can see her slowly adventuring into new techniques like the use of knitwear, without going to fast and I think it's the best way to go.

12.- Mary Katrantzou:
Mary Katrantzou is a somewhat new designer from London, with prints and bold use of colors. In one of the most creative concepts I've seen in a while, she made prints with photographs of luxurious houses interiors; posh living rooms, or colorful dinning rooms. The accesories completed the whole look by hanging like chandeliers in the top. The great thing was that besides the prints, the cut of the dresses could stand on their own, and there were also shorts and other separates like lampshades skirts.

13.- Kenzo:
If you have read me, you could have infered that Antonio Marras work for Kenzo has grown on me, and this was a particular important show because it was the house 40th anniversary. The collection besides the usual great sense of color and clashing prints, was an interesting mix of Asian and European way of dressing. Two concepts completely opposite that gave tons of light layers and lengths with a provenzal touch.

14.- Comme des Garçons:
Rei Kawakubo is one of the few who doesn't care. Her brand has never been about bussiness and trying to make people understand and buy the clothes. She therefore, designs without any restraint so it is always intriguing. For Spring, dresses or coat were literally done from other dresses and coats, a side panel from a dress was a whole dress just sewn in that section, it's someting similar to what she has done, like paper dolls.

15.- Dries Van Noten:
There's such an ease on a Dries Van Noten collection, it's all about clothes that you inmediatly want to wear. As much as I appreciate a great concept, when someone does conceptual and commercial with this hability, I'm in. This time the show had 2 different characteristics, roomy square jackets nd pastel florals that wear inspired from melamine china, as a result the jackets delivered tailored while flowy satin dresses and separates in these prints gave softness.

McQueen of the Future

The death of Alexander McQueen was perhaps, the most shocking moment for contemporary fashion. However, in these days everything is about business and almost instantly Sarah Burton became the new creative director of the brand. She among other things, helped finish the last collection Mr. McQueen created, then she did resort and now the first complete ready-to-wear collection was shown on Schedule in Paris Fashion Week for Spring 2011.

Spring 2010.

Acknowledging she has a huge burden on her shoulders, Sarah thinks that as a woman the brand during her reign will become a softer less theatrical version of the original creator. After all, she really is the best possible option to carry on with the house design, since she worked for almost 15 years with him. For Spring, it showed. The inspiration came from some organic place, and all the signature McQueen silhouettes were worked in and adapted to go with the theme of the show. Rigid short dresses with the origami-like folds and pleats were done in a printed yellow leaves fabric, sharp jackets, tailor coats and ultra low trousers were done in white and navy, the ones in navy were embroidered with gold leaves. Other pieces included monarch butterflies, raffia-like straw, and feathers, a gown was done entirely in feathers, on top short wide ones and marabou on the trail.

Spring 2008

Everything did felt less intricate, but talking about McQueen doesn’t mean plain at all. And of course the shoes were also signature creations, with the highest heel or platform possible; booties, sandals and wedges in black cream and gold were a nice contrast to the concrete runway with grass sprouts on the unions of each plaque.

Spring 2009

Though it was a nice first show, every look that came out of the runways was a silhouette already done in a previous collection, let’s say from 2005- to the past Spring. And let’s be honest, the inspiration was not that strong to help her develop a greater show, Sarah certainly has proved to be up for the job and maintain the great standards of quality still delivering some semi-couture looks, but for the next shows her innovations for the brand need to be presented, as well.

Monday Inspiration Board

We are already caught in Spring 2011 show season, and Fall just went by terribly fast. As always, soon I'll post my top 15 collections. Since it's been ages since I last wrote something, it feels right to do a Inspiration Board, I know there's one just right below this, but it's been a lot of time between each one and I think I'm feelingcompletely different.

It's all red, there's something very powerful in that color. Instantly gives a sense of love or at least sensuality, therefore just expressing self-esteem and empowerment. Pics come from Vogue Nippon (Malgosia by Cédric Buchet and Eniko by Camilla Akrans), Vogue Italia (Mariacarla by Meisel), Numéro (Ginta by Greg Kadel) and Harper's UK ( Lily by Guy Aroch), red cardinals and a dusty landscape.

Layering Styling

I love magazines that dare to break a total look from a runway show and portray exclusively the stylist's interpretation of the clothes. That proves in my opinion, that clothes can stand alone and represent the brand without the need of a complete outfit. Though every wardrobe needs basics, I do believe that they are not really worthy of investing as much money as you should in a statement piece from a designer, that would be use to higlight the most simple outfit. I don't believe in buying 500 dlls. jeans or plain t-shirts.

So this is just for fun, breaking random runway looks and do tons of layers which give a nomadic finish, playing with proportions of outerwear and using skirts or dresses with all kinds of lenghts. I hope you like it.

A bohemian post

Posts have been low during summer, but it's the only chance I have for spending time with all of my friends on the same city, and have a few short trips. Now things are slowly going back to normal and so I expect the posts here.

Today I want to write about how sometimes there's this huge trend for a while and everyone seems focused not only in makig clothes in this aesthethic, but also allow it to be the main topic on editorials and guide the cycle of fashion for a few seasons. The current trend is the reinvented minimalism with military details. It was great when phoebe did it and that in a few time it could become such a success, I totally get the appeal, it's comfortable, easy to wear, usually separates, nice shapes, and most of the time neutral colors.

As much as I love this idea of clothes to live in, that would get old with you and always give a polished finish to your outfit, let's face it; it doesn't show the crazyness and theatricality one would expect from the best designers of the world. That's why sometimes you don't really need anymore of what everyone else is doing, and one turns to unexpected creators.

Antonio Marras in Kenzo has done a good job bringing the legacy of the brand ahead, and all that things we say about new designers in old houses. But recently that job has really stepped up to a good zone. His fall collection had the common bohemian influence, but was achieved by mixing patchwork from awesome silk printed fabrics in maxi dresses and tons of layers, capes, coats, blouses, foulards and vests in loose silhouettes that if it makes sense looked like a 70's Poiret inspired look. The campaign was shot by Sorrenti which is always a good thing.

For resort Antonio Marras presented a fun and colorful collection with flowered print blouses, trousers and short kimono-like dresses. There was also gorgeous knitwear in color-blocking blue, fucsia, turquoise and orange and for accesories modern obi belts that cinched the flowy fabrics perfectly.

I think it's remarkable to create clothes that look current and can be worn today but without compromising your specific vision to a wider trend, there are great separates in both colections who can create a clearer look, but the styling definitely helps to express otherwise. One could only hope that he remains in this path and gets the success the brand deserves.

Sunday Inspiration Board

I'm completely attracted to 80's fashion, though most of the time over-the-top, women were unafraid, powerful, and confident. Their beauty came from an intelectual place instead of the obvious cleavage showing, and for me that woman smelled like Yves Saint Laurent Opium and wore bright lipstick.

A Mistery

Few information is available about a woman who I deeply admire and respect. It's a bit unfair how women in fashion have stand out, every wannabe fashionista knows who Anna Wintour or Anna Dello Russo is, but there are tones of people on the magazine world also which are doing great stuff and sometimes have had even more influence in today's design but have succesfully stayed under the radar. That woman is Babeth Dijan editor-in-chief of my favorite fashion magazine Numéro.

She started her personal project in 1983 a French magazine called Jill that only published 11 issues until 1985. The magazine reflected the new wave of french design, raising stars like: Jean Paul Gaultier, Azzedine Alaïa and Thierry Mugler but also the arrival of Japanese designers to the fashion capital. Regular contributors of the publication were Peter Lindbergh, Jean-Baptiste Mondino and Ellen Von Unwerth. The project started with the support of a modelling agency and the idea was to use the agency's people, which often didn't happened, it had no real advertisers and most of the editorials were done on Babeth's grandmother athic.

This feel of playing fashion is what makes Numéro, the magazine she started in 1998 , so different from the oters. The reason for starting it was to make something appealing to powerful and strong women that featured fashion but also art, design and music instead of the new wrinkle cream, and how to catch a man. There's few evidence for people in the third world about that magazine but I've been lucky to find this photos online.

Random comeback

I've written tons of times that the most interesting career in fashion for me is to be a Stylist or Creative Director for magazine editorials. Many people don't understand the meaning of this concept unless you are involved with fashion. Each magazine has a target and therefore, a way of portraying clothes differently, many times the same clothes could have a playful, youthful aproach or a sober, ready for work one. Besides one must consider the concept or story that you develop along with the photographer, wether the photos are being shot in location at a gorgeous beach or inside a studio with fluorescent props and blue lighting.

All this sounds good written but let's make it a little more practical, here are few looks from some designers that were featured in several editorials, I'll post it as it came down the runway and then how each stylist use it for a shoot.

Chocolate for Fall

I started to make a styling without a particular theme in mind and I realized that there are lots of chocolate brown clothes this season. I didn't feel like lowering down the intensity of this brown with neutrals, so I chose to contrast it with bright colors.

I love how it turned out, because this season clothes are super comfy and relaxed, well tailored but easy to live in and by any means sacrifices good design.

First: Reed Krakoff blazer, Chloé skirt and Davidelfin tights and heels.
Second: Haider Ackerman jacket, Balenciaga drees and heels.
Third: Burberry Prorsum jacket, Halston dress, Margiela boots.
Forth: Kenzo coat, Bottega Venetta blouse, Guccci trousers and shoes (the pants really are brown, but the lighting makes them purpleish).
Fifth: Balmain coat, Yves Saint Laurent dress, Dior boots.

So women have much more clothes that are just reserved for them, the way a smoking was traditionally for men before Yves or ties or cuffs or flannel shirts. Well, actually women have nowadays the power of wearing anything in the mens department without any kind of prejudice, sometimes becomes a powerfull trend and it's even encouraged, like the "boyfriend jeans" or spacey shirts or oxford shoes.

Men have narrow items they got to stick to and anything outside that it's considered to be gay. Cause you know all gay population in the world wants to be girls and wear girls clothes. Sometimes few garments manage to become popular in the men mainstream like those super big skirts for men in the 90's that were styled with Doc Martens or colorful jeans.

Much of what has expanded our vision towards menswear dressing is rock, as in Rock n' Roll. The most masculine example of a man one could think of, besides firefighters and lumberjacks are rock stars, and they by pursuing a more complete show, had dare to wear things only left for women, thights, heels, makeup, and people wouldn't dare to question their manhood.

This post specifically, is about guys who wear heels, but not just dragqueens or rockstars who do them for the show, but normal guys who love fashion and enjoy wearing them on a daily basis. Guys whose styles I respect a lot and are a great influence in my personal way of dressing, but also have open my opinion towards heels for men. At the end is only a matter of personal opinion and a shape you gotta get used to before starting to like it.

The Post About Menswear

I'm terribly sorry, the lack of posts lately has been unacceptable but I had to leave to Guadalajara and well it has been kind of a vacation. I'm back to regular posting mode now and there are tons of things I want to share, a lot has hapened in fashion since I last wrote about it. Menswear Spring 2011 and Fall 2010 Couture collections were presented.

Let's start with menswear and since I don't really care that much about it I'll just write about my favorite collections; Rick Owens, Ann Demeulemeester, Dries Van Noten and Comme des Garcons.

Rick Owens inspired in nuns for Fall and the result was as good as usual, his aesthethic is so appealing to me that I could wear every single piece. It's weird how he manages to make thing that could look feminine so rough and masculine.

Ann Demeulemeester had the best idea for her show. The whole collection was presented in white, thight pants, intricate jackets and rubber boots, then when once thought the show was over, the same utfits came again in black one after the other, replacin cotton for leather.

Dries Van Noten create basics that are just cool and effortless, this time the clothes got their edge by appearing paint dripped or chlorine stained. There were pants, jackets, or coats in peach or salmon that looked awesome with denim.

Comme des Garcons presented skirts, cropped trousers, drop crotch bermudas and overall a great range. It was almost all printed with skulls, checkers or this creatures that reminded me of the forest ghosts in Princess Mononoke.

New Vogue on the Block pt.2

This is the second part of why I liked Vogue Nippon so much, if you happened to miss the first just scroll down or follow this link. I'll start by saying that the last post I wrote about how the magazine shows you the garmets on a bigger scale so you can really see it closely, here's an example.

For the May issue there was a blogger's article, featuring Yvan Rodic, Bryanboy, Jane Aldridge and Tavi, Tavi is even bigger in Japan, she had her own article as well about her trip to Tokyo.

There was also this rad fashion network thing which I could more or less understand because you get to see photos of which person is connected with whom, it's fun. I only wish I knew japanese.

And at the end, horoscopes which have also a nice illustration and changes every month.

In June the McQueen tribute was published with photos from his last collection.

There was this very cool editorial-buy section, where the model was a doll and the designer outfits were done in her size to fit her...

a page which recommended what to wear for different types of wedding and a funeral.

And the last and favorite was this glorious day-by-day journal of every outfit that Anna dello Russo wore during fashion week, my favorite part ever.

Every issue is also featured with critic, review and illustrations from the great Sarah Mower, her drawings are cute.

As you can see Vogue Nippon is the most interactive Vogue, and the editorials are no less impressive I will just post one image and the link on the bottom for you to see them if interested, cause they are all over in the internet, it made no sense to scan them and upload them again.

Uniforms

My best friend Yuriko gave me the idea of designing a school uniform. I'm no designer and the intention of the blog has never been show to show my doodles, I don't think I have anything worthy of sharing with you in the design department yet. However, this was an incredible idea for a styling, specially since there are so many collections for Fall who look a little 50's, 60's and have that schoolish aesthetic all over them.

As I remember, from my school years, elementary and middle high, we wore uniform. For girls, skirts shouldn't be much higher than the knee and a white blouse and the school sweater complimentes the outfit. I tryed to mantain school rules as much as I could, since they are well, grown-ups clothes some might look like the classroom teacher.

First: Miu Miu blouse, skirt and shoes Louis Vuitton
Second: Celine coat, Missoni skirt, Chloe shoes.
Third: Dolce jacket (that will be closed), Dries Van Noten skirt, Burberry Prorsum boots.
Forth: Chanel jacket, YSL skirt, Calvin Klein boots.
Fith: Proenza Schouler sweater and blouse and purse, Rochas pants and heels.

New Vogue on the Block pt.1

I'll start today with a post I divided in two, so stay tuned for the other part wich I'll try to post at the end of the week.

What may be the main reason for regular people like you and me to not read/buy a fashion magazine? I had give this a serious thought, and a few reasons occured to me. The first may be that not knowing anything about the industry makes less apealing to eagerly know, which model graces a certain cover or what photographer took which photos. Second, we can't buy the gorgeous fashion they are selling because it's way too expensive for our budgets. Finally and most important is that fashion magazines are not really aimed to youth, without Nylon or Teen Vogue, magazines are not that approachable to a younger audience, which happens to care and know about fashion without really caring about surrogacy pregnancy, hormones in fish or the latest non-surgical anti-age procedure.

Teen fashion magazines are often frustrating, since they are so caught up with aiming to regular teenagers that you almost never see real fashion in it's pages. Clothes are usually the same all year round and it's just such a playful approach that just very few times we get interesting photos or editorials in its pages.

Angel my best friend just received from a friend who was studying abroad two issues of Vogue Nippon, and after seeing them and discussing them with him I thought it would be really interesting to share them with you. I was insecure about Vogue Nippon because the covers on the internet seemed a little boring and the same white background from Inez and Vinoodh had got me already tired.

It's a whole different deal once you see it live, the colors are brighter, and the magazine itself it's bigger, heavier and made with really nice paper. The content it's fresh and definitely young, but here the differenece is that the magazine is not trying to teach you about fashion or telling you how you should get dress, instead the magazine assumes that you already know how to and just presents itself. Every section feels a lot lighter and fresh, there's more illustration a thing that I personally miss from fashion and in the buy suggestions clothes are not being modeled by anyone and the photos have bigger size which lets you focus more in the garment. In general, Vogue Nippon has sense of humour and is really fun to read but at the same time is creating beautiful images and presenting photographers riskier work.

The magazines came with three supplements: Brides, Gioiello and Kids. First two had nice covers.

This section is great, each month they make a summary of what other editions of Vogue have published around the world, the highlights. In my opinion, it also makes a statement, saying that most of your content is original.

Resort B

So besides my personal opinions, the schedule and the collections are settled and the calendar keeps moving forward, there's nothing better to do than just go with it and keep apreciating what it's been done. If you don't know what I'm talking about the post is for Resort a mid-collection and I wrote about this before here.

There are other collections that I have been liking a lot and I though I would share with you, there's not much to say but just that at the brightside of this mid-seasons is that you get the chance to see more work from your favorite designers or fashion houses, and that it definitely set a preview tone or inspiration for Spring.

Another inspiration board. I love doing these because I get the most random images pasted under the same space. I try to combine beautiful images in this case all sea oriented, the fashion shots are all by Camilla Akrans, but including something a little more personal like Sea Shepherd, an organization I know because of my sister interest in sea fauna and the conservation of it. They are modern times pirates which defend whales from human predators, which hunt them for industrial purposes.

Resort, Pre Fall, Spring, Fall, Spring Couture and Fall Couture

Fashion timming is the hardest part to understand about the bussiness, you've got the dates when clothes are being shown and then the time when that collection actually hit stores. Since the very first moment the garmet steps to the runway, to being able to walk in the store and buy it aproximately 6 months went by. So just to clear everything up, in the ready-to-wear division Spring is presented in September and hit the stores around February, then, Fall is presented in March and gets to the store in August-September.

During each season, basic clothes that follow the line of the main collection were slowly created and introduced for sale along the rest, they were just done to cover a faster need. That's how mid-season collections started, now most brands present mid collections. Resort that are supposedly clothes for traveling and is presented in June, comes between Fall and Spring. Finally we have Pre-Fall which are the beginnings of outerwear and as the name says it goes between Spring and Fall.

I honestly hate mid-seasons, since they are basically more wearable and commercial toned down clothing, that lack a strong concept behind them compared to the main collections, their point is to just make wearable clothes that go straight to retail, without any other inspiration behind them, but to make nices things for women to wear.

The old formula in my opinion, of slowly introducing the pieces that were needed to complete a season felt more personal and close to consumers needs. The most logical result is that now this collections are selling better than the main ones, only achieving more coverage and becoming more important for a house bussiness. Creatively they are sometimes not even designed by the Creative Director but the design team instead and are not very inspiring to photograph or appreciate.

All the explanation was just to say that Resort collections have been presented and I want to share some of my favorite looks from them.

Today I'm talkin about cinema, it's the second thing I like the most in the world. It's funny cause I have the most diverse taste when it comes to movies. I love drama or sci-fi or animation or terror or comedy, it's really more about authors than the movie itself, and it´s at the same time kind of sad that the last picture I have completely loved was Gran Torino, almost two years ago. I've been to the movies, but I just haven't seen recently anything as good as that one. In my opinion the whole industry hasn't been that interesting lately, and don't even get me started on all the recycled projects that come to the big American studios just to make money (coug cough; Sex and the City 2, anything Twilight, Shrek unfortunately, and any adaptation from a tv series, 80's movie, or videogame).

I finally watched Avatar a few weeks ago, and while I really liked it, I also though that it was the American movie with persons of an epic adventure from Hayao Miyazaki, in 3D. The effects may be great, and it's definitely an awesome journey, but I just think that movies like Nausicaa or Princess Mononoke give a stronger message, that what Avatar accomplishes to express. Besides the fact that Avatar with that diary-like, off-voice throughout the movie, explains you every single fact that you have already understood. I always wondered how a live Miyazaki movie would look, and it was answered.

If I had to choose an era of cinema to watch, it wouldn't be this one. The classic American films from the 40's and 50's are my favorite ever. Women where this powerful creature which filled the screen and reflected their power in every close-up, stories where much lighter in most of the cases, and just fun to watch. They didn't had pretentious undertones, and different narrating perspectives, the language sounded better and the performances weren't natural, because well, they were acting.

Needless to say I have a great admiration for the strong diva characters that women played during those years, a phenomenon never achieved again. Betty Davis, Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, Grace Kelly, Lauren Bacall and Jane Russel to name a few had the carriage and grace to stand out in a crowded place. In Mexico the same effect happened simoultaneously, Andrea Palma, Dolores del Río, Maria Felíx and Miroslava to name a few had the same star quality that their American counterparts, the film industry in our country then diminished but we have also never seen stars like them again.

Another Fall Preview

So fashion crowd is pretty much done with Spring and is moving on to Pre-Fall and Fall. I never pay much attention on this blog to accesories, I rather talk about clothes themselves or just a general critic about something in the industry.

It's a funny thing, I don't normally wear that much accesories, I don't like to carry a watch, and sometimes I just hang something to my neck or use my cool gas mask ring I bought in H&M. But I do like them, in my opinion it's the most accesible item one could aspire to have from your favorite designer, for regular fellas like me who can't really afford ready to wear,at least not a new designer wardrobe each season .

Sometimes I acknowledge a designer's talent and become interest in his work, but need to somehow prove that I really like him through the seasons and it's not only because for his first collection he was the next big thing. New York it's the place for emerging designers, it's where to go for new talent. Thanks a lot to the CFDA Fund which supports and advises this group of young designers, they created for instance, a fashion incubator where designers have a work space inside the CFDA facilities and every year they give awards which often includes consulting and economical support to help them expand their brand.

One of this emerging designers, the one I am trying to talk about, before the introduction, was first discovered because fashion crowd like Lauren Santo Domingo and Carine Roitfeld were wearing his line, I'm talking about Joseph Altuzarra. He was born and raise in Paris, and has worked for Proenza Schouler and then Givenchy before deciding to start his own line. He was nominated this year as best emerging designer for the CFDA awards, but Jason Wu won, whatevs...

His debut collection Fall 2010 consisted of 18 looks, which included perfect thight dresses, great tailored coats, jackets and pants. His clothes stand up as sexy but clasic, perfectly suited for working women of different ages. For Spring he turned to the prairie, making pantsuits and jumpers in light brown suede with ruffles and other white looks with details in this material. Now for Fall 2010 his inspirations seem a little darker, the sharp tailoring that his been working it's now combined with goat hair, black leather has been worked as if it has rough stitches, and his signature skin tight dresses are now made from red velvet.

I think he has a strong point of view about women dressing, there's nothing about his clothes that feels cute or girly, wether his playing with ruffles on white shirts or velvet in red carpet dresses. His line feels empowering, something that succesfull women feel comfortable wearing, but have the attitude to make it look right. It's nice to have the opportunity to watch the evolution of a designer from his very beginning, we'll be following closely.

Ok, so this is just a Fall styling preview, since I don't know wether it's right to start so early or not. It's just insane to look at outerwear when my room it's this hot. Well I don't know... here it is, theres not an actual topic but just outfits made because I liked the items. On the next stylings made the ones with a certain topic I'll try to post a whole inspiration behind them, maybe the place where I imagine it, or the poses the models would have.

Gone Beaching

Fashion is a jealous bussiness. Magazines for instance, have each a small group of photographers which they like to work with, that's why you have to buy several magazines to get a wider view of fashion. If you'd only buy US Vogue, then you'd be stuck with Mario Testinio celebrity portraits, Patrcik Demarchelier or David Sims studio shot and a Raymond Meier accesories editorial. Numéro, for instance, one of my favorite magazines, works with Solsve Sundsbo, Miguel Reveriego, Camilla Akrans and Greg Kadel.

I'm writting this because sometimes magazines as any other work involving creativity, get a little stuck, and while they have great editorials, articles or ideas, they just don't feel as powerful as they used to. My favorite edition of Vogue is Paris, I consider it to be the clearest example of woman embracing their power with strength without losing appeal au contraire, becoming sexier and appreciating their beauty in a casual way.

Vogue Paris works with Ines and Vinoodh wich I sometimes love and some hate, their covers are boring. Mario Testino also publishes more interesting work here, and other frequent collaborators are Bruce Webber, Steven Klein, Mert and Marcus, David Sims, etc.
The magazine, while it still has great photos, had entered for me a nothing new phase, until the May issue came along and there was Mario Sorrenti who saved the day with a gorgeous Natasha Poly summer editorial. His work never really stood out for me, though I was instantly in love with the May spread.

Then June/July issue came out and there's another one with the same vibe featuring Kate Moss and this time getting the cover. I got my March Vogue Italia and there he was again with Liya Kebede, and then April W with Daria Werbowy. It's rare how you recognize someone in the industry but never take the time to really analyze their work. Sorrenti photos are all about the angles, which most of the time are totally off but give interesting results, it's a nice combo of angles vs. movement and elegant posing.

For me this year of Mario Sorrenti's work has come like a breath of fresh air to magazines that I had slowly been loosing interest in.

The Future of Couture

Early this week I finally purchased the March issue of Vogue Italia, one that it was definitely worth spending the 239 pesos that costs. If I had more money I would totally buy it every month, but since it's not easy then just March. In the couture supplement there's a gorgeous editorial photographed by Tim Walker, the one that's illustrating this post, it's somewhat a retrospective of couture from the last 6 years, and it features emblematic gowns from the houses through this period.

I bet you don't hear much about Haute Couture, but to describe it briefly it's a french term used to classify clothes that are made by the highest quality possible and has a determined number of fittings. The best quality including expensive luxurious fabrics, specific focus on detailing and most of the time hand-finished. In France the place where we could say couture started, all clothes up to 1900 where made this way and the wealthier crowd continued to mainly dress like this until the 1940's.

Couture encountered Pret-a-Porter, which is what all of us wear now. Clothing mass produced, sold by sizes, in huge deparment stores or by international chains. So what's the future of Haute Couture when this society don't dress in it anymore? They say it's only time for it to disappear.... But I completely disagree. Karl Lagerfeld says that middle-eastern women buy 26 looks from his couture collections for Chanel in less than half an hour, so well it kinds of sells just on the other side of the world. And the ones that we get to see using them but most of the time are wearing it as a loan are movie stars. Red carpets are one of the last remaining sites for couture sighting.

As I see it Couture accomplishes two big objectives: 1.- Gowns are promotional items. PR offices see in Couture the opportuniy to dress celebrities and gain respect and recognition among the normal crowd who will want a piece of Chanel, who Diane Kruger was wearing it. So they'll go and buy a nice Chanel perfume, cause it's what we can afford, or sunglasses or a bag. Sad but ture. 2.- Haute Couture are incredible pieces which are closer to art than to a basic t-shirt, and it just give us great photographic material. The illusion of this fairytale world, which looks great published on magazines. We only get to see the final result, but the people who are able to touch, wear, photograph, style, and make couture are really lucky.

To wrap this up, Couture in any case needs a little editing to survive, though the collectios are normally shorter, an editing eye also saves the company big bucks. Finally I would personally love, to see more fashion houses doing couture. It would be awesome to see Stefano Pilati do couture for YSL, Alber Elbaz doing it for Lanvin and even Miuccia for Miu Miu which always presents their show in Paris.

Summer-Monday Inspiration Board

It's been hot like never before in my city, and it's so hard to live in hot weather, I completely hate it. Anyway, since it's been so hot, I have been dying to go to the beach at least for a few days and I think it's happening soon.

With that in mind, and seeing everywhere the surfer trend being used, I made this as an inspiration board to keep me hopeful an isnpired for my upcoming vacations. The girls are from Vogue Australia, Flare and US Elle. In my imagination they might be surfing in Puerto Escondido.

Stylists

In my opinion, the most important aspect for an editorial to came out right is the styling... Photographer and stylist most of the time discuss the main theme of the photos, and what clothes will suit it best, according to the location, the colors, the type of photograph or just the trend that they want to higlight. It may seem easy to just take clothes from a rack put it together, and dress the model, but it's not at all. A lot of thought need to go under the wardrobe because in most of the cases they express the whole feel of the shoot, clothes as well as the model need to be in balance and became the focus of each shot.

Each stylist works a different way, and has a signature way of putting clothes together. Some like things clean and nice, others love to do layering ore use a garmet where it shouldn't be worn, and others add something that is off making it unperfect. As said in "The September Issue", Vogue's Creative Director, Grace Coddington may, argueably be the best stylist in the world, she has done some amazing job for American Vogue, specifically I love her in the fairytale editorials.

Other stylists I admire are George Cortina who has done amazing work for Vogue Nippon, his women are superstrong and uncompromising, not classical. Marie-Amélie Sauvé who has managed to print her french elegance and charm into more relaxed and imaginative work and my all time favorite, which is also Fashion Director of W Magazine, Alex White, she can literally do anything look incredible. It's a joy to see how the theme of the photos is well represented in the clothes.

These careers in the industry are vital, and it's a shame that now designers are asking to not break the whole outfit and use it as it is presented on the runway. As I see it once the sample is sent to the magazine for photographs is up to the magazine decide how they are going to style it. Designers should trust on their garmet alone to be recognizeable of the brand they are designing. Whats left for a stylist to work with if he or she should not break the look.

Same Brand, New Director

Big fashion houses that have a legacy and history in the industry, often stand alone by the recognition among people which buy their perfumes or the cheap ties and socks that are made under the name's license. They also most of the time are owned by a bigger conglomerate, something very similar to like GE and NBC in 30 Rock. Well not that similar.

Every now and then this labels decide to keep up making luxury clothing, the thing that made them famous in the first place, and the bussinessmen behind them hire a creative director. Thats how new direction for a brand can make it remarkable again.

Rochas had a nice time with Olivier Theyskens during the mid 2000's and then in 2007 he was fired. The label remained closed for three years and now we have Marco Zanini doing a 60's inspired collection (the third one) for Fall, which actually is his strongest so far, and has lead the house into a more recognizable place.

Cacharel is one of those french traditional houses that has seen come and go a bunch of designers, that for some strange reason never succed. For the past two seasons Cédric Charlier has been doing changes and not rely on the name alone to sell, but offer instead, a range of clothes aimed to a younger audience without being über sexy like Balmain and Hervé Léger but instead comfortable and quirky. Cédric worked at Celine and Lanvin before getting this job.

If you follow the blog, you might already know this but I love the way that Peter Dundas has designed for Emilio Pucci. It's young, fun, flirty, and just the right amount of sluttyness to not feel vulgar.He has also just made three Ready-to-wear collections, but his distinctive point of view has make it perhaps one of the coolest new houses, but doesn't feel completely opposite whith what the original Emilio Pucci standed for.

How amazing can you be to get the luxury of leaving the brand you used to design for and then came back (to a different one) and achieve to create the next big thing, again? Phoebe Philo for Celine has just done two Ready- to-wear collections and is the most influential house right now. Celine after Michael Kors saw many different designers come and go, and none was that important.

The last is a wound that still fresh. Nina Ricci's new leading man Peter Copping replaced Olivier Theyskens, who left with a bang. I need to see more of the new guy to see if he's a worthy competitor. Let's hope that the men in suits who run the bussiness leave designers long enough to develope their own identity for whatever house they are in and get comfortable with what their working. Most of the time it's such a fast industry that you are left wishing have seen more of some designer's work.

I don't get...

I don't get the whole issue about including "real" women, whatever that means on magazines. A model by definition needs to be phisically different from the rest, she should have besides a striking face, a nice body and height above normal. Of course, extremes aren't healthy and I don't support the use of really skinny models, because they can give the wrong impression.

Fashion is aspirational, and women in most cases aspire to look like that, but they should know that models showcasing clothes do it as work. Wether magazines are directing what or what not to wear, models in editorials often tell a story and should be appreciated as a form of expression. There's always the need to be a better you and that's o.k. but it's just dumb to feel bad because you don't look like the people who are supposed to represent an industry that's based in beauty and changing constantly the stablisment.

Models definitely do it better, there's no point in seeing printed a woman that you can see wherever you turn your head. Beauty makes the world a better place and it's not a sinomyn of shallowness to want to appreciate it and develop it.

Spring-Summer feels about to end, though Summer hasn't even oficially started. Givenchy as usual released their Fall campaign already and it's... nice, but the June and July issues will start releasing Fall clothes and ads.

This Spring was tough, there wasn't that much lace or florals or just girly pretty clothes, something common for Spring. We had the complete opposite, military, minimalism and graphic prints, in other words not a lot of romance. In my case after seeing hundreds of different editorials of magazines from all over the world I kind of miss it. We could blame the economical situation, but also the political influence, we have wars, in my country specifically against the drug traffic, and serious climate change. Funny to see how fashion interprets it, but I am wishing to see on September some romance for Spring 2011 collections.
Man, seasons go fast.

The Gala

The Gala at the Met was last night and as always we had those celebrities who play it safe, glamorous in an old Hollywood style, the models who often go over the top and are really fun to watch , and the designers or other celebrities who just look normal.

Since this year the topic was american fashion one would have expected specially for American starlets to be dressed in American designers. Eva Mendes in Dolce and Demi Moore in Lanvin apparently didn't get the memo, but neither did Anna Wintour that was wearing Chanel. It would have been nice if just for one night all the american attendants could have worn american designers.

My personal favorites were Jamie Bochert in Rodarte, Lauren Santo Domingo in Proenza Schouler and Charlotte Gainsbourg as always in Balenciaga. Most of the dresses were a little too glamorous and classic. I think that in the past years celebrities were taking more risks, which is always something to be thankful for, even if they don't look that perfect.

The Rules in Menswear

Is a fact that when it come to dressing men have fewer options that women, men can't be that much daring and have to stick to pants, shirts and that's it. Any interesting cut or technique, and even texture which is not the usual can be confused with something feminine and then you give the wrong idea.

Just think about fur, or silk, or satin and obviously tulle or organza are materials forbidden in menswear and generally almost impossible to pull off. I'm writting this only because weather in my town has been insanely hot, last week temperature was about 36°C 97F, and there's a non written rule about guys not wearing shorts for going out at night. Girls, however, wear shorts when going to a club, so I tried to make an outfit with shorts for going out last night.

The flax shorts where a gift and are from Old Navy, the jacket is from Zara and I don't remember where the shirt is from, I wore my Puma sneakers to keep it young. I think that if you can make it work, you can wear anything, and I will definitely start caring less about what a guy must wear.

The New Valentino

Fashion on the outside may appear as a glamorous and incredible world, and on the surface it is. But it's also a bussiness and the whole objective of runway, magazines, models, beauty and clothes (specially for the big stablished houses owned by investors and giant corporations) is to sell.

Chanel, Balenciaga, Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent to name a few have found a succesful creative director that can make both, commercial pieces but also respect the legacy of the house where they work. This houses are on the safe side of the fence, because their creative directors have made a career inside and have it all figured out.

On the other side we have houses that have struggled to find commercial success balanced with a strong creative direction: Rochas, Nina Ricci, Ungaro, and finally Valentino.

When Valentino left the house in 2007 Alessandra Facchinetti was the chosen one for carrying the legacy of Mr. Garavanni, but after just two seasons she was out. Pier Paolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri are now, after Alessandra the creative directors of Valentino. For a few seasons they were playing it safe, just triying to honor the brand, but after the Spring 2010 collection, Valentino was on a different direction.

The brand now aims to a younger audience, and has make bolder and daring choices. I thought that the Couture 2010 collection was completely new from what they have been doing, people said that it was referential from other designers like Nicolas Ghesquiere, because of a futuristic-tribal theme, but at the same time it felt romantic and it's what the house needs.

I think that Valetino has found their new designers and are here to stay...

Male Model

I never really care that much about menswear, or the men fashion industry. Nevertheless, every now and then I like to just try to know what's going on, or take a look to the season campaigns, try to know if there's any new model or something.

A few time ago I saw a guy who I thought would be a good model, but there was not that much from him, besides some agency polaroids and a Vogue Hommes Japan. I also could never remember his name, Paolo Anchisi. I found him a few days ago again, and apparently he now has more published work. He's the son of 80's supermodel Lynn Koester, and I think he will be huge in some time.

For some reason he embodies to me a new kind of male model, he's not the super buff Abercrombie guy, but neither the skinny Ash Stymest rocker type.

The next Costume Institute Gala, happening May the third 3rd will be about American fashion; "American Women". As usual Anna Wintour will be chair as well as Patrick Robinson from The Gap and Oprah Winfrey, from The United States of Oprah. That red carpet, at least for me, it's the most expected. I never really care what everyone is wearing to film award ceremonies, because most of the attendants are boring and safe.

That's honestly my general opinion on American fashion as well, but I do have some expectations about what everyone would be wearing, and hopefully get to see a lot of Rodarte. The whole American fashion theme seems to be a nice idea for a post. I do not like American fashion today, but we have to thank them for their contribution, sportswear and separates.

Since the Industrial Revolution, United States was the first coutry that jump into the boat of making clothing an industry, and not something crafted in ateliers by couturiers or dressmakers as it still was being done in the rest of the world. That creations were often standarized, since they had to fit a range of women, and thats how sizing begun.

It was also easier and more comfortable for women to start wearing separates, skirts with blouses and jackets and much later, pants. The american way of dressing influenced the rest of the world and still does. The way denim became mainstream and now everybody wears it, as well as flip-flops, track suits and basic t-shirts. Well that may not sound glamorous and something to be proud of at all, but it's what real people wears.

American fashion has also had great designers, and a cool way of portraying their society in a certain period of time, through the way of dressing. Halston succed dressing the hedonist glamazon of the 70's as Calvin Klein did with the minimalist woman of the 90's. along with; Bill Blass, Ralph Lauren and Oscar de la Renta (though not born in the US) they have elevated American fashion to the level of the European capitals.

I always say that the best fashion is the one that can be provocative and give a good show, I don't wear a lot of designer so that's why I may like the theatricals over the wearability of a collection. I also like designers which I can easily recognize, because I think that they have a strong point of view, and that's what ultimately makes them famous.

Thierry Mugler

He was the outrageous designer for almost three decades, changing the world of fashion and taking it to a new direction. His runway shows where always over the top, creating garmets just for the fun of it and the visual appeal they may have, not wearable at all.

He's famous among other things for the use of latex and the creation of the craziest corsets, and that metalic body armor that has been used over and over. His inspirations were always powerful women, sometimes even cartonish, like comicbook's heroines.

He may not be your cup of tea, but during his working years, Thierry was the definition for avant-garde on the fashion dictionary. If you ask me, the brand needs to launch womenswear again, under another designer if he's not up for it, because against this utilitarism trend, some latex and sequins would do real good.

Don't you love how sometimes fashion takes inspiration from dark places, witchcraft, magic or others? I think it makes it interesting and a safe bet for elegance and anything but vulgarity. I'm sure we all have some kind of belief and I seem to be disscusing it a lot lately, specially since I wore an embellished t-shirt with the face of Jesus last Friday.

Today with that in mind I remembered how fashion has a particular love for the dark arts, a little Harry Potter here, but if you think it, the extreme white faces, black lace and a vibrant red mouth could be the costume for the modern witch. Through history all this tradition and old costumes have given us countless source for imagery and it's nice to see how photographers or magazines make it their own.

This will be the last styling for Spring, and I don't know what I will style next since I plan on starting with Fall around June, probably... PreFall is not something I support, and you can't really play that much with a couture gown. There wasn't really a topic for this one, but I tried to mix print with softer pieces, and to showcase some of my favorite collection of the season.

Whenever I'm feeling uninspired, I start to remember those things that I absolutely love about fashion; a certain collection from Nicolas Ghesquiere, or a shoe that I used to love, a photograph from a Número editorial, or a gorgeous model that hasn't been featured for a while. Then inspiration comes right back and sometimes is much more obvious that my stucked brain would like to admit.

Today is about how Stefano Pilati used to rule the mood of the seasons with his collections for Yves Saint Laurent. He was named lead designer of the brand in 2004, after the reign of Tom Ford. He has a much more relaxed, loose silhouette in mind for the YSL woman, and likes to mix certain pieces of menswear with romantic clothing giving interesting results.

I know that he has gorgeous collections like that Spring 2007, where the runway was made of grass an violets, and the campaign featured Karen Elson, and Shakira wore those heels for a music video, IMO Stefano in Yves made insane high heels fashionable and desireable.

However, 2008 was mi favorite year in his career on Yves. Spring 2008 is my second favorite womenswear collection in the whole world. I can't really describe what his inspirations could have been, except for something perhaps preppy-inspired. That gave as a result great blazers, the most beautiful blue, vest mades of sparkling metallic arrows and dresses with a bit akward shapes embellished with tons of miniature stars. It also has mi favorite shoes which are strappy sandals that had a foot figure like on the bottom, and just a thin metal bar betwen the heel and the tip of the foot.

Then for Fall he did this futuristic power woman, all the models were wearing a black bob wig and black lips, peggy sue trousers and great leather jackets, with black patent lether ankle boots in the highest heel. All has been going down from there. His collections now feel already seen and lacking a concept as strong as it used to be before. There's been rumours about Stefano leaving YSL and that the brand may be on the hunt of the next director. I hope they are not true, Stefano still has a lot more to offer and some more great things to do, let's hope the future brings back something as strong as we have seen from him.

This little break it's over, and I'm a year older. The weekend included some heavy partying, but it was really fun and I wouldn't change a thing. Thanks everyone!

I hadn't been to Zara in ages so I went like 2 weeks ago, besides their spring collection which is a total Balmain-Chloé-Celine mashup knockoff, which I kind of love and hate, I couldn't stop staring at Ranya on the walls. She's one of my current favorites, and I always had love how she can appear powerful and even fearsome, but here it's all cute and approachable. I always like girls this versatile.

So that's all, I'm back.

It's Spring Break in México, Today the blog is going on vacations and will return by the end of next week or the beggining of the next one. Promise not to go for so long... I was watching t.v. last night, getting ready to sleep, when Bjork's "I Miss You" music video appeared, and I thought: "I can't believe I don't have a post about her yet". Bjork was my favorite singer/performer when I was in my young teens like 6 or 7 years ago, man that makes me feel so old.

Every new album, she came out with a completely different concept and her work is visually a great source of inspiration and just a beautiful collection of images. I remember I was the happiest 13 year old when I got the Bjork Live Box for my birthday. Thanks to her I also got to know my favorite film director; Lars Von Trier. Since she starred in the first movie I saw from him, Dancer in the Dark.

Pagan Poetry and Venus as a Boy are two of my favorite songs of all time. I just wish people would get to know her music and not just the Marjan Pejoski swan dress she wore for the Oscars. While I was getting this screencaps from her videos I saw Alarm Call again and I remembered her connection with Alexander McQueen, it's nice to recall how they created the Homogenic cover and their collaboration for the Fashion Rocks events, while watchin Joga, I instantly remember Alexander McQueen's Spring 2010 collection, those reptiles would live in that landscapes. I love to see how this creative couples influence each others work .

Tribal

This post took a little bit longer to make. It's been a while since Hugo and I did pictures, and I really like the way we work, and how we get all creative and try to make something that we think it's cool, and at least well made.

This photos were born, as our own desire to make tribal. They were supposed to be beauty shots, but they were a little harder to take, I was covered in paint that keep tearing and leaving strech marks as I moved, and the accesories we got and others I made had to be put on after the paint, it was still really fun and I loved how they turned out.

I always try to make this blog 100% mine and that's why I love to post this photos. It's something that we are creating from the ground and it's original content. However, I think it's really egocentric to appear in all the photos we create, but I do it just because it's difficult to get friends to pose covered in paint and not wearing much. I promise to make some photos where I'm not in them, just developing my concept and styling behind them.

Dior Couture

It maybe somewhat a random post, but I had this 2005 Vogue lying around my room, so I opened it and this pictures where the first thing I saw. This show was the true spirit of couture, I remember loving every single part of it. I was specially fascinated by how original it was to make dresses that appeared to be in the middle of their construction but looked done at the same time. The production for the runway was perfect because although it was theatrical it went side by side with the clothes, and combined perfectly.

Galliano was good, and though his new fall collection for Dior it's interesting I think he's loosing his magic, I hope he can prove me wrong.
This has been one of those epiphany moments where I don't see myself living for anything other than fashion.

So nuns are everywhere, and it's a subject which I really like since I come from a Catholic upbringing and stuff. There's something so dark and secretive about religion and Catholics Christians in particular that fascinates me. We know there's guilt and the supposedly humbleness and fear to God, but it has translated into gothic art and impeccable craftmanship in all the Catholic countries.

To briefly describe the images, there's part of a scene for Dark Habits, also the editorial with Jean Paul Gaultier and Maria Carla Boscono for Harper's, Lara Stone in Vogue Paris, a YSL Fall 2010 look, Edita Vilkeviciute in an editorial for Numero September 2008 and Damien Hirst's diamond skull.

There's always this question of which designer would you choose to wear forever, any collections he or she has ever created but nothing outside of that. Then I think that everyone's vision change and it's not about making a statement anymore, but choosing someone who offers versatility as well as wearability and just clothes you love.

That's a nice practical way to criticize fashion or a designer's body of work. There are so many options wether to choose from, as a man I nailed it down to just two, and it's more about an specific collection, but I wouldn't mind wearing all they've designed.

Hedi Slimane's Spring 2007 collection for Dior Homme...

and Stefano Pilati's Fall 2008 collection for Yves Saint Laurent.

The decission would get a little bit tougher if I were a girl but after a lot of consideration there are also juts two designers I would wear,

Miuccia Prada...

and Nicolas Ghesquiére in Balenciaga.

I may not always be absolutely astonished by Miuccia creations but I must recognize that her clothes are absolutely elegant and modern, easy to wear and very appealing. Nicolas has done and re invented anything I can think of. There is nothing cooler, still nowadays, that his shrunken blazer with jodhpurs and a palestinian "luxurious" scarf from Fall 2007.

1.- Balenciaga: Balenciaga is one of my all time favorites, but last Fall with the mission of being romantic, the collection loose all the Sci-Fi element I love. This time Nicolas created beautiful clothes that you couldn't fully understand at first sight but also truly wearable pieces that doesn't look generic. The shoes are to die for...

2.- Haider Ackermann: I don't know what to say, Haider can make leather whatever he wants to. The collection is breathtaking. I love his cuts, I love his aesthetic, I love how it is modern and dark, and that's all it needs to be said.

3.- Celine: Phoebe is in a world of her own for Celine, but that's a good thing. See how she is sticking to her vision, it's definitely paying off. Minimalism was the word that could describe 80% of Fall collections and it's thanks to what she has done for Celine. Clothes were simple and beautiful and desireable.

4.- Rodarte: You know I love their art and technique, the show was truly moving, specially when the lights came down, the white gowns shone in blue, as well as the white papers on the floor, the heels lighten up and "Bluee Moon" started to play on the background.

5.-Viktor & Rolf: Their show had the most original idea of the season. Girls came semi-naked and clothes were taken from a overly covered Kristen McMenamy, and used to covere the model who continued their walk on the runway. Fashion can be crazy and still showcase nice clothes.

6.- Lanvin: Alber Elbaz can take anything and make it chic. I hate that word but this collection exuded elegance and refinement without being unreal. It is his best propposal for work clothes and outerwear so far.

7.- Emilio Pucci: Peter Dundas in Pucci has been a favorite of mine. He designs respecting the labels heritage, that has always been sexy and print, but making it relevant and fresh. It would be nice if he had a Balmain moment, cause he deserves it.

8.- Jil Sander: Raf Simmons is making cool clothes that are simple but interesting at the same time, he was inspired by Lara Croft and The September Issue. Ideas that made sound cheesy turn into a nice result.

9.-Marni: Marni embodies that european lady of the mountians with a graceful elegance, for me, Prada was lacked that quirkyness. Thanks god Consuelo it's here to deliver. Colors prints and textures are great, and can be separated for a mellower effect.

10.- Miu Miu: I didn't get Miuccia for Prada this season, however, Miu Miu had nice colors and interesting clothes in a 60's vibe, that I loved. The show was great and I think it has nice editorial stuff, that would also look nice in real life.

11.- Chanel: Lagerfeld shows for Chane are always huge and interesting. This time he brought an iceberg to the runway, it went perfect with the clothes that had faux fur appliques, or a light icy palette.

12.- Rick Owens: Rick may have presented a best sellers collection with mostly wearable stuff, but styled in such a clever way that you see his point of view strongly throughout the show, and it wasn't boring at all.

These are my favorite 15 collections of the Fall 2010 season. There were some nice ideas, though most of the shows focused on make sellable basic pieces, giving no much room for crazy shoes, and really innovating concepts. It starts with number fifteen and I'll be uploading sets of tree till I get to number #1.

13.- Alexander McQueen: We got to see exquisite clothes with that characteristic influence of classic art that he had but with new process of printins and creation. I guess he had a nice idea for a show but unfortunately we didn't get to see it.

14.- Comme des Garçons: Rei Kawakubo is not in the bussiness of making sexy clothing but instead defying it and creating interesting cuts and silhouettes. It was similar to 97's Lumps and Bumps collection.

15.- Maison Martin Margiela: The brand was plain awful for the last seasons, apparently the new creative team is now making things better and staying on the right track. Let's hope this wasn't luck.

Saturday Styling

By now you should have seen in magazines and everywhere else, what the theme of this styling is, military with a minimal approach. Spring had all kind of diverse inspirations this one has been the one that everybody has been presenting in editorials and it was all over for Spring. Celine had it only with few details and references, so did Chloé, Balmain was the most obvious. I didn't want the looks to feel ready for the streets, I hate those kind of simple stylings.

First: Chloé coat, Celine dress, Givenchy leggings, Rick Owens boots.
Second: Haider Ackermann top, Celine skirt, Ann Demeulemeester boots.
Third: Celine top, Burberry Prorsum skirt, Rodarte heels.
Forth: Chloé shirtdress, Balmain jeans, YSL heels.
Fifth: Balenciaga top, Chanel trousers and clogs.

Mexico Fall 2010 part 2

Paola Hernández

Paola Hernández is now a recognized designer among the fashion scene in México. She has presented collections in Fashion Week Mexico or whatever mexican event we've had for some time now. She has also presented her collections in New York. Her signature are clothes with a vintage feel, inspired by american sportswear of the 30's and the beggining of clothing being industrialized. She always chooses a monochrome range that goes from black to white. This season had nice outerwear options, like capes and all sorts of jackets, some short and fitted and other in a wider more regular cut, that suits all types of bodies. My favorite look was a bodysuit in a very small houndstooth, that was waisted with a tiny black belt. The shoes were pretty nice two, black and two-toned oxfords that often were up in the ankle becoming a bootie. I didn't like however, that some of her creations seemed real vintage. For instance, a jacket in big houndstooth with strong bulky shoulders and black lapels, that was very 80's. It's nice to take inspiration from other times, but it need to feel modern and current. I am intrigued if Paola could break out of this in the future.

Paola Hernández es una diseñadora bastante reconocida en la moda en México. Ha presentado colecciones en los eventos de México así como también en Nueva York. Su estetica es siempre ropa con un aire nostálgico y un poco vintage, inspirada en el "sportswear" americano de los años 30's y el momento de industrialización de la ropa. Siempre escoge paletas monocromáticas que van del negro al blanco. Esta temporada ha creado muy buenas opciones para el frió como capas, chaquetas ajustadas al cuerpo, y otras un poco más amplias y largas que favorecen cualquier tipo de cuerpo. Mi look favorito fue un completo en una pata de gallo muy pequeña que se estilizo con un cinturíon delgado y que se vió bastante moderno. Los zapatos estuvieron tambien muy bien, eran zapatos oxford negros y bicolor (blanco-negro) que en ocasiones se elevaban haciendo botines. A pesar de todo no me gustó que varias prendas parecían vintage en verdad. Por ejemplo, una chaqueta de pata de gallo pero mas grande, con hombros amplios y solapa negra, parecía una prenda real sacada de los 80's. Es válido que usemos inspiración de otras décadas pero debe al mismo tiempo de sentirse actual, moderna. De cualquier manera me intriga lo que hará Paola para la próxima.

Être

Jose Luis González designs Être, a young and funky brand that has built a reputation in nice short dresses to party but with a nice idea behind them. Each collection is a totally different concept but with a similar approach that makes him recognizeable. This one was a nice journey through colors and prints that reminded me of the visual richness of México. The firts looks were developed in tones of light brown, mauve or toasted pink, combined with pieces in black. In this earthy tones, one of the most interesting prints of the season came out, a image of two roosters with mountains in the background, and wide diagonal stripes that framed it, as minidresses, tops but the best of all were the trousers. Then came two similar tribal prints in different tones, one with blue and the other with green, in a variety of short dresses that had interesting construction and details on the shoulders, thanks to the makeup giving the idea of a softer feminine warrior. The clothes were nice, but some of the outfits had been styled badly, using wide belts that did'nt look as tasteful as the clothes themselves. The tribal prints were as well, a little reminiscent to what Gucci did for Spring.

Jose Luis González diseña para Être, una marca joven y que se ha construido en base a muy buenas opciones para vestidos cortos de fiesta pero con una idea interesante atrás. Cada colección es muy diferente conceptualmente pero con un enfoque similar que hacer a la marca reconocible. Esta me pareció una travesía por México y me recordío a toda la riqueza visual que tenemos. Los primeros looks eran tonos cafés claros, rosas quemados y malva combinados con piezas negras. En estos tonos, salió uno de mis prints favoritos ésta temporada, dos gallos con unas montañas en el fondo y líneas en diagonales que los enmarcabas, fueron minivestidos, tops y lo mejor, pantalones. Despues salieron otros estampados como de inspiración tribal en azul y en verde, muy parecidos entre sí que dieron oportunidad de presentar los vestidos cortos elaborados en formas muy interesantes, casi todos con detalles en los hombros y gracias al maquillaje, me recordaron una especie de guerrera. La ropa estuvo bien pero el styling no me convenció, con el uso de cinturones gruesos que creo que no se veían tan bien como la ropa. Los prints tribales me recordarón mucho a Gucci de primavera.

Malafacha

Malafacha is done by Francisco Saldaña and Victor Hernal, their mission is to make clothes that can mix a urban style with wearability, nice separates that could make a statement in your wardrobe but styled during their shows to creater a higher level of drama. That's what the collection for fall embodied, clearly being inspired by this homeless, vagabond style. Their construction was achieved by color-blocking plaid fabrics with plain colors, like blue, red, olive or light peach and blue. This kind of inspiration is perfect for fall since it translates into nice coats and jackets perfect for the season, as well as nice dresses or plaid leggins that would layer for a cool effect. Thanks to the make-up and the head pieces that complemented nicely each look, the show was one of the most dramatic of the bunch. When I started looking through the images of the show I instantly remembered last year's covers of Vogue Italia. It's nice to get inspired by themes that have been done before, and I don't know if they did inspired by the actual magazine, but I couldn't help thinking that the concept has worn out. Hopefully next season would take a different path.

Malafacha la hacen Francisco Saldaña y Victor Hernal, su misión es combinar estilo urbano que al mismo tiempo sea facil de usar, con prendas que por separado portan un buen mensaje y que gracias al styling, el show siempre toma un rumbo mucho más fuerte y dramático. Eso fué lo que personificó la colección para otoño, claremente inspirados por una estetica como de vagabundo. En terminos de construcción telas a cuadros fueron usadas en una especie de "color block" con otras telas en colores solidos como rojo, verde olivo, azul y durazno. Esta clase de inspiración da muy buenos resultados para otoño, porque bien traducida, nos da abrigos, chamarras y chaquetas que pueden ser estilizadas en capas con vestidos y los leggings de cuados, para obtener un efecto interesante. Gracias al maquillaje y los sombreros que fueron buen complemento para cada look, el show fue uno de los mas dramáticos del grupo. Cuando comenze a ver la colección me recordó instantáneamente a las portadas de Vogue Italia del año pasado. Está bien inspirarse por estos temas que ya hemos visto varias veces, no se si se inspirarón de la revista tal cual, pero llegue a pensar que es un tema demasiado usado y ya no tan interesante.

Lorena Saravia

Some of the shows I liked the most came at the end. I've never heard of this designer, so I went through her collection without any previous reference. I came across a Fall collection done in neutrals as most of the designers are doing for Fall; black, white, beige, navy and brown. The clothes were interestingly wearable, with an eye that feels very modern and true to what it's really going down right know in the industry worldwide, reinventing classics and making lasting pieces. Her options for white shirts, skirts dresses and capes felt new and clean in their design. She also used leather as a daywear option, making it into dresses, something that would be everywhere for Fall. This collection felt right not just for youth but for a wider range of age, having things that could be worn by an 18 year old, or her mother and would look nice on both. Some variety was missing in the collection, like more trousers or jackets, but it was a nice collection and I hope she stays true to her aesthethic and also creates something nice for Spring.

Algunos de los desfiles que mas me gustaron llegaron al último. No había escuchado antes de Lorena Saravia, así que revisé su colección sin tener ninguna referencia pasada. Me encontré con una colección de otoño hecha en colores neutrales: azúl, café, blanco, negro y beige. La ropa fue interesante pero al mismo tiempo fácil de usar, con un ojo que se siente moderno y además apegado a las tendencias internacionales que ha estado tomando la industria, o sea, reinventar clásicos y hacer prendas que no pasen de moda. También uso la piel en minivestidos como una opción para el día, algo que creo que estará en todos lados para otoño. La colección se siente hecha para un amplio rango de edad, igual le queda a una chava de 18 años que a su mamá. En términos generales fue muy buena pero me gustaria verle mas variedad, espero que para primavera se mantenga fiel a este estilo y siga haciendo algo interesante.

Daniel Andrade

I had also never heard of Daniel Andrade. For Fall his collection was a journey, the hability of going through without loosing part of yourself, or something like that. So it was translated to clothes that felt inspired by travel, think of a very modern Julie Andres-Sound of Music leaving Austria. It had nothing costume as my reference may sound. The colors were very sophisticated and so were the sharp geometrical cuts of the garmets that had a tough feeling but thanks to the details, like soft fabrics that came out of a dress, a flower attached to another one, some ruffles, and a nice play with silk on blouses, the balance between hard and soft was perfect. His garmets felt powerful and new. They may be for youth and younger adult women, but it weren't tacky or vulgar at all. The last looks were definitely the strongest and my favorite dresses of the season, red, blue and green fabrics where dyed as if they have been spotted with chlorine creating somewhat a print. then managed into short dresses with long front zippers, that weren't tight to the body but felt very flattering, the inserts of a softer fabric in a contrasting color covered a shoulder on just sat from the waist to the hip. It was a nice achieved show that proved great design hability and a better execution.

Tampoco había escuchado de Daniel Andrade. Para otoño su colección fue un viaje, donde exista la habilidad de continuar sin dejar parte de tí en cada lugar, o algo así. En cuanto a ropa, se tradujo en algo inspirado en ropa de viaje, un tipo La Novicia Rebelde cruzando a Austria pero moderno. No hay nada de disfraz aunque mi referencia lo pueda hacer parecer así. Los colores fueron muy sofisticados igual que los agudos cortes un poco geométricos en las prendas que daban a veces un aspecto rudo, de cualquier manera se logró suavizar gracias a la tela que salía de los vestidos y flotaba, así como una flor que estaban colocada de manera estratégica, volantes y juego con la seda de las blusas que caía con gracia. Las prendas fueron poderosas y nuevas. Probablemente una línea destinada a las jóvenes y digamos que las adultas jóvenes, de cualquier manera no hay nada vulgar ni cursi en su colección. Los últimos vestidos definitivamente, fueron los mejores, en rojo verde y azul con zippers largos en el frente, creó un efecto en las telas como goteadas por cloro que parecía un estampado, las telas mas suaves contrastaban los vestidos cubriendo un hombro o saliendo de la cintura hacia la cadera. Fue un buen desfile que probó gran sensibilidad hacia el diseño y una muy buena ejecución.

Judging by the shows alone, México has a nice range of designers each doing their own thing, and some of them prove the hability to be at better places. I just think they need people with jobs that are only created once that the foundation of the industry has been firmly reached, and are consultants and better stylists. The weakness of the shows could be easily fixed by having other eye that their own that helps them edit and without compromising their vision create something that would make their collections richer. That consultant task would be if a designer can afford one, the job of the media. In every fashion capital , the designers showcase their work to the few editors or voguettes which gives feedback, and sometimes could make a designer create a more solid collection. That and the media support to cover events like this it's what would make a designer get known and people into the stores to buy them.

Juzgando únicamente por los desfiles, creo que tenemos una buena gama de diseñadores, cada uno con un fuerte punto de vista y algunos con maestría suficiente para estar en mejores lugares. Creo que se necesitan personas que la industria crea una vez que los fundamentos de ella se han afianzado y son consultores y mejores coordinadores de moda. La debilidad de los shows pueden ser arreglados si existe un ojo exterior que les ayude a editar sin comprometer la visión del creador, para que sus colecciónes queden más completas. Ese trabajo de consultoría, debería ser en caso extremos de los medios. En todas las capitales del mundo los diseñadores muestran su labor a algun editor o voguette de confianza que les su reacción y puede ayudarles a hacer la colección más sólida. Tambien se necesita que los medios cubran a los diseñadores y este tipo de eventos, porque así es como a la gente se le antoja entrar a las tiendas a comprar.

This blog is just about what I love, whether it is styling clothes by cutting an copying, having a photo concept that it's taken to reality, writting about my favorite designers, models or photographers, sharing with you a collage of photos that inspired me at the time, or every now and then an editorial I find amusing. I don't pretend to be media, because I'm not trying to inform anyone, my goal is just share a huge part of me.

Therefore, I must say that Alexander McQueen's death still gets me down, just to think of how much talent he had and how we are never going to see anything done by him. We must appreciate and be thankful for a great body of work that has left to fashion. It's been anounced that the label will carry on, and it definitely makes me angry, any brand that it's not an 80 year or older fashion empire should die with the designer, that's not how bussiness are done this days and people who run them should be ashamed.

On a brighter side, WWD released a few moments ago the last McQueen collection, done for Fall 2010. They were just 16 looks so I'm guessing it wasn't almost done, as it has been said. I want to post it here as a tribute to a man that never run out of creativity and with a strong point of view gave us tons of important moments, wish I had known him...

Some time ago I came across this picture of Paulina Porizkova, an old Cosmopolitan cover, taken by Fancesco Scavullo. I saved it on my PC and didn't exactly know what to use it for. I love the intensity of the colors, and how young and fresh it looks, eventhough it was from the 80's. It also made me understand why brands like Moschino or Versace got to be so appealing, I always considered them kind of trashy. Anyway, I found the picture today and tought it would be nice to found black and white photos of whom I think that embodies youth for me, and paste the photo in the middle. The collage itself may not represent how I'm feeling, but I like that it looks fun.

Mexico Fall 2010 part 1

I must begin by saying that I wasn't at the shows, unfortunately I had some apointments that I couldn't cancel in order to attend International Designer Mexico. However, my press acreditation allowed me to acces the photo archive where I got the chance to take a look at the collections and create the collages that I'm showing you. By not being at the shows you can't judge them by the rythm of the models, or the soundtrack, and you don't also know their inspirations and background of each collection, so whatever judgement are here written are only of the clothes and the collections alone.

I also want to say that I don't really like blogs reviewing collections, because there are fashion journalists which do it as a job, and do it better. Suzy Menkes, Cathy Horyn, Sarah Mower or Tim Blanks, to mention a few, are experts that have such a vast knowledge and when doing a review their decades of fashion background allowes them to do it right. In Mexico though, we don't have this kind of careers and people in charge of reviewing the collections, and the few that do, often miss the point and don't really criticize from an objective point of view. Since I'm reviewing something from Mexico, I will make the posts in both languages. Thanks to IDM for the photo material, all credits go to them.

Quiero comenzar por decir que yo no fuí a los shows, desafortunadamente tuve compromisos en Cuernavaca que no pude cambiar, así que no fuí a IDM. De cualquier manera, saqué una acreditación como prensa y eso me permitió obtener las fotos del archivo del evento y de ese modo pudé tanto ver las colecciones como hacer los collages que comparto con ustedes. Es importante decirlo porque al no estar en los shows no puedes criticar otros aspectos de los desfiles además de la ropa como el ritmo en el que salen las modelos, el soundtrack y mas importante la inspiración o la explicación que da un diseñador de su colección. Por eso solo me limito a criticar la colección sola.

También quiero decir que no me gustan los blogs que hacen repaso o critica de colecciones porque existen en el mundo periodistas de moda, que tienen muchísimo más conocimiento y experiencia que nosotros los bloggeros. Simplemente tener décadas haciendo su trabajo y viendo moda, les permite hacer una critica mejor informada y con muchas más referencias. En México desafortunadamente, los pocos periodistas de moda no hacen un repaso de las colecciones via Internet, a veces se llega a criticar por medio de revistas y un poco tarde y los que lo hacen en Internet, sinceramente, no los considero objetivos ni críticos en verdad del trabajo de los diseñadores. Cherry Project

Jonathan Morales designs Cherry Project, a line that is always oriented to youth. His clothes are always sexy, with an edge making it a favorite among young mexican starlets. For fall he chose a very light palette, except for a few black looks at the beggining it included red, pink, aqua and white. There were a few silhouettes created that were repeated in all the color scheme throughout the show, all the pants were skinny and the skirts tight balancing it with wider and long t-shirts that were nicely printed with phrases. There was also attached to the pants, skirts, and other type of tees leather aplications that ended in straps, giving the idea of garters. The shoes were peep toe booties in the same colors with a bandeau effect that seemed really cool. My favorite piece of the colection was a black minidress with pointy shoulders (which was a little late), the fabric resembled a broken brocade with gold details achieving a nice effect. The only flaw was that the same outfit came down a little too many times, and the colors weren't really suited for a Fall collection, it would be nice to see his aesthethic in outerwear.

Jonathan Morales diseña Cherry Project, una línea que siempre ha sido orientada a las jóvenes. Su ropa es siempre sexy y es favorita de las celebridades adolescentes en México. Para otoño escogió una paleta ligera excepto por algunos looks en negro al inicio. El resto incluía rojo, rosa, aqua y blanco. La figura creada fue repetida en los diferentes colores por todo el desfile. Todos los pantalones eran skinny y las minifaldas muy justas, se logro un balance con el uso de playeras más amplias y largas que tenían frases impresas. En otras playeras, faldas y pantalones habían aplicaciones de piel de las que salian correas, dando la impresión de ligueros. Los zapatos fueron botines sin punta en los mismos colores y quedaron muy bien. Mi pieza favorita de la colección fue un vestido negro con hombros en punta (lo que me pareció passé) pero la tela era una especie de brocado- reptilesco dando un muy buen efecto. La única falla fue que vimos el mismo look muchas veces, y los colores noe ran adecuados para otoño, me hubiera gustado ver algunas piezas propias de la temporada en su estética.

Mancandy

Andres Jiménez desigs Mancandy, a label which is always earthy, light, in soft natural materials, that are perfect for wearing, specially during the day. This collection was called "Mendigo", beggar or vagabond in english, so the pieces were great outerwear styled in layers to give that homeless look in a polished way, making it pop with nice fur and bones one of a kind accesories. The long bermuda shorts, capes, parkas, jackets and coats were great wearable options for next fall, specialyl adapting to Mexico since they are not for extreme cold. Colors were great for fall, dark blue, olive green, cream, beige and nude made nice wardrobe options. One of the best looks had a long skirt that went all the way to the floor. However the show had the worst continuity in the outfits that were sent down the runway, some where all layers and some where polished minidresses, that had nothing to do with the rest of the collection. The stilyng was definitely the problem if some of those looks where completed sith layers, it would have been much more interesting visually.

Andres Jiménez diseña Mancandy, una firma que siempre hace ropa ligera, en materiales naturales perfectos para usarse en especial, durante el día. La colección se llamó "Mendigo", así que las piezas fueron acumuladas en capas para dar un aspecto de indigente pero de una manera muy bien trabajada y pulida, haciendo uso de accesorios únicos hechos de pieles y huesos para resaltar los atuendos. Hubieron muy buenas bermudas, chaquetas, abrigos, parcas y capas, que ofrecen una buena opción y aparte se adaptan al otoño en México el cual no es en extremo frío. Fue una buena elección de colores para la temporada, hubieron verdes olivo, azules oscuros, tonos crema, beige y piel. Uno de mis looks favoritos incluia una falda que llegaba hasta el suelo. A pesar de todo, la coleccion tuvo muchos problemas de continuidad, habían looks llenos de capas y habían minivestidos cortos que nada tenían que ver con el resto de la colección. El problema fue la manera en que se estilizo, con mas prendas encima, los minivestidos y la simple camisa con pantalon, hubieran sintonizado mejor con lo demás.

Te Amo

Rafa and Roberto have established themselves in the small world of fashion in México as one of the most experimental and alternative brands. Their subject of inspiration are usually dark and gothish. For fall they chosen an almost complete black palette with a few pieces of canary yellow and a more mustard tone, vibrant blue-purple, the regular soft grey, and a colorful print of a constelation. If you separate the pieces, they are strong enough to stand out on its own and are really interesting, with a cool factor that is aimed to youth succesfully, the yellow skirt of the opening look, the black jackets with the ripped shoulders and the shortened tee with the hands could be bestsellers. The collection as a whole, was a little disappointing. I just wish I could see more play with color, using bright hues with black it's always safe, and even when the constelation print came out it was either styled with the same print for an overall look or again with black, or gray. Although the clothes are fresh I question if they have any theory of color. The other thing were the boots, which are incredibly similar to Rodarte.

Rafa y Roberto se han establecido en la pequeña industria del país como como una de las marcas mas creativas y experimentales. Sus temas de inspiración siempre son oscurones y medio góticos. Para otoño escogieron una paleta casi negra total con algunas piezas en amarillo canario y otro tono mostaza, asi como azul tornasol, su clásico tono gris claro y un estampado con muchos colores de una constelación. Si separas las piezas, tienes ropa que por si sola puede ser interesante y de propuesta fuerte, destinada a un sector joven exitosamente, piezas como la falda amarilla que abrio el desfile, las chaquetas sin hombros con mangas que comienzan abajo y la playera corta de las manos, pueden ser en verdad vendibles. En concreto la colección me decepcionó un poco y esque me gustaría ver más juego de color, escoger dos o tres tonos vibrantes y combinarlos con negro siempre es una apuesta demasiado segura, hasta cuando salió el estampado de constelación iba estilizado en un look total con el mismo estampado o con más negro. La ropa se ve fresca y nueva pero en verdad cuestionó su teoría de color. No puedo dejar pasar también que las botas eran como las de Rodarte.

Manhes Massun

Manhes Massun is a brand made by two female designers, Sophie Massun and Isabel Manhes. Their line is always colorful and for Fall they chose to work with all shades of vibrant blues getting all the way to purple as well as brown and some gold and beige in the last two looks. The brand has always played with colorblocking and that's how this time they combined all the different colors sometimes even making them clash. Most of the collection consisted in dresses of long length, almost all of them below the knee. I like how they choose some mexican inspiration to portray on their work without making the piece feel like a typical mexican costume. This time it came in silk pleated dresses with lace that created a geometrical pattern. The overall silhouette however felt a little akward and though there are great separate pieces some of the dresses themselves wouldn't work in the real world.

Manhes Massun es una marca creada por las diseñadoras Sophie Massun e Isabel Manhes. Su línea es siempre bastante colorida y para otoño decidieron trabajar con muchos azules vibrantes llegando al morado, así como café y beige y dorado para los dos últimos looks. La marca siempre ha jugado con el "colorblocking" y así fué como esta vez combinaron todos los diferentes colores a veces hasta haciendolos chocar. La mayoría de la colección fueron vestidos largos casi todos abajo de la rodilla. De ellas, me gusta como cada colección escogen alguna inspiración mexicana y la trabajan sin que parezca traje tìpico, esta vez se pudo ver en vestidos tableados con encaje vibrante que hacía una especie de dibujo geométrico. La silueta en general estuvo un poco rara y aunque hay muy buenas piezas separadas algunos de esos vestidos no funcionarían mucho en la vida real.

Kris Goyri

I hadn't heard that much about him, except for an exhibition of his illustrations shown on the past edition of this event. The collection was Kris Goyri Resort, and I'm not sure, if this was a resort collection, then it was a little early o way too late. It was definitely among my few favorites. Kris has an elegant approach and he may not be focused on being groundbreaking, or creating something never seen before, but he sure has great taste and one of the best executions of the bunch. The silhoute was nicely shaped around the body without feling tight in palette of light shades of blue, with ivory, that contrasted with a soft peachy orange. He also had nice prints that included polka dots in shades of brown and orange, a floral one in a blueish-purple background, and a jungle themed one with tigers and palm leaves. His collection was as wearable as it can be but done in a graceful way, and are definitely clothes you want to wear.

No he escuchado mucho de Kris Goyri salvó por una exposición de ilustraciones que presentó en la edición anterior del evento. Ésta colección fué Kris Goyri Resort y no estoy seguro de sí es o no una colección de resort aunque así parece, de serlo fué un poco temprana o demasiado tardía. No importa porque fué de mis favoritas. Kris demostró un enfoque elegante y seguramente no tenía en mente venir a revolucionar la moda ni crear algo que nunca hubieramos visto, de cualquier manera hizo ropa con muy buen gusto y una de las mejores ejecuciones. La silueta de la ropa se ajustaba ligeramente al cuerpo sin sentirse muy ceñida, en una paleta que iba de azules claros, a colores neutros marfíl que se contrastaban a su vez con naranjas durazno. Tambiés cabe destacar que escogió estampados acertadamente, como lunares en tonos naranjas y cafés, florales sobre un fondo azul-morado y uno de tema selvático que tenía tigres y hojas de palmeras. Su colección es ropa que puedes usar pero hecha con clase y que definitivamente se te antoja.

Few words about my country

I almost never talk about what is going on, fashion-wise in my country, Mexico. A few years ago there was an important youth movement, with awesome parties, as well as interesting new music performers and subsequently designers. Creatively, those years were really important and I think they elevated the status of Mexico City, to a place where you could feel something big going on. I don't feel that there was any other underground scene in Latin America like we had those years 2005-2008 in Mexico.

Designers Marvin and Quetzal had their moment as well as the later created brand TEAMO, so did Mancandy and finally, Temores. Quetzal unfortunately died on 2008, and I am not trying to say this was the only reason, but somehow the party was over. Designers now have to face the serious bussiness aspects of creating a well-sustained brand, that was popular among their pals in a small group, but now needs to be succesfull not only inside the country but most importantly, out, since we as customers have no knowledge of other fashion that is not Abercrombie, Hugo Boss and Armani. We don't even recognize what's a designer's brand and what's regular retail. This vast talent explossion we have couldn't achieve to became mainstream, so now each one needs to take thier own path in order to achieve success.

It's also essential to mention that fashion publications in Mexico have featured mexican designers on the few editorials that they produce, but I think that what the industry would need from the press it's also the possibility to feature designers profiles, so as a reader you can get to recognize who they are, and what they have to offer. Perhaps magazines should be the most interested in having a platform where they can showcase their work, like Vogue used to support Mercedes Benz Fashion, because being a national edition of an international magazine could also help a designer gain some recognition in and outside Mexico.

We've had fashion events that succesfully manage to emulate a Fashion Week (we had our own fashion week edition, which no longer exists), and that's the way we can see on a runway Mexican designers work; DFashion, Mercedes Benz Fashion Week and going on as I type International Designers Mexico (IDM). I'm writting this because my next post will be a short run through the Fall 2010 collections presented on IDM, and I want you to know where I'm coming from.

I just want to share with all of you this wonderful editorial for Vogue Paris, from March 2010 issue. Vogue Paris is my favorite edition of Vogue, and has always been. I like this type of editorials where you can see it's nothing too fancy, and everybody is having fun. The team are also making the concept with humour and not triying to appear real. It's shot by whom other than Bruce Webber, who does relaxed better than anyone and styled by Joe McKenna. The models are also a great element, as we get to see Brooke Shields doing fashion, with Candice Swanepoel and Elaine Irwin.

Every fashion season comes a time between Milan and Paris when I have seen tons of new collections and I'm feeling overwhelmed as well as a little lost, this season in particular is making me much more confused. I don't think I will be able to see another black pantsuit withouth going mad...

There's nothing worst for fashion that economical crisis, it is fashion's kryptonite. Luxury is the first thing that gets cut by customers when going through a difficult time. This sounds so 2009, but aparently sales keep going down, so great stablished brands that have always, even last year, been fearless are now for fall making dark, boring, and work-appropiate, their key elements. We must not forget also that pre-fall and resort lines as being more down to earth collections, have been selling better than the usual ready-to-wear.

That's why this season I wasn't fond of Prada, except the accesories which I loves as usual. I expect it to always be the leading brand of the season, and in Miuccia's words: "she was just making clothes", it shows, the great majority of designers this season are just making clothes. I know some may say that the nerdy aesthethic, 50's inspired is Prada's trademark, and I agree, but the way to approach it, wasn't that interesting. Marni did it better in my opinion.

Spring for some reason now seems so long ago, when we had all this optimism, bright colors, and a nice combination of both crazy shows and clothes, but also cool easy to wear options. I'm really expecting a miracle in Paris.

Today I woke up missing Olivier Theyskens work, I think he sums up whats we are loosing...

Ever since I saw her video with Melissa Auf der Maur vocalist of The Smashing Pumpkins, I was really convinced of Karen's talent, it's so nice to see her explore other creative fields, specially something that can be more your own than modelling.

A lot of things sometimes happen to you in a couple of days that make you discover something you didn't really knew. I love how that happens because it's the easiest way I get inspired and decide to talk about an specific subject here, and it's also how I know I still love fashion. Cause believe me that browsing on the internet to get a particular cover of a magazine published in 2000 is not as easy as it could be. Why don't we have real places that collect and storage fashion, (covers,editorials and collections) and could be easy for us to acces?

The lot of things that happened recently were:

1. I bought my December-January issue of Vogue Paris, that comes late as you know, and was amazed by the Bruce Webber interview and birthday present to Pedro Almodóvar.

2. Davidelfin has been presenting his collection in New York for a few seasons now, and I had no idea, so I checked Spring and Fall 2010.

3. I just discovered today a beautiful editorial from August's 2001 i-D magazine. Nylon and i-D were perfect during those days, Dazed and Confused still is IMO.

I knew Eleonora a.k.a. Bimba Bosé, from the duet she did with Miguel Bosé for his last cd. In México, Miguel Bosé has always been succesfull, and his songs are popularly known, I even went to one of his concerts last year. Bimba, seemed young and attractive in the video, and I knew she had been a model but as any other model-celebrity that walks on a show because she's friend of the designer. I was totally wrong.

Eleonora had a nice career in the early 2000's walking tons of shows, and being the face of Gucci and Versus campaigns. She was also in the cover of the second issue of Pop magazine, Vogue Italia, i-D and Dazed and Confused. I love her androginity and toughness, that doesn't seem vulgar or overly masculine. She's the classic european beauty that it's unaware of her sensuality, and that makes it even more appealing.

Flowers, birds and spiders

This one is how I would wanted to play with prints for Spring. They were everywhere and in every possible way, from flowers, birds, spiders and sea creatures, to tribal, opticals, and bold graphics. I think that mixing them and making them clash is much more fun that just wear them using the same color palette or the same mottif. I think that as a designer print could be a huge risk, cause sometimes doesn't always manage to look chic, it's not as easy as doing a dress in a plain colored fabric.

Monday Inspiration Board

I hadn't done one of these lately. I just feel inspired by Spring, which I am anxiously waiting, that's why I also picked some images that reminded me of a farm; the pig, yellow grass, Anja Rubik in that Vogue editorial, and the new Rodarte collection that feels a little western to me. Since the colection was based in Juarez, I decided to put them running down the border, stepping over a Guy Bourdins picture and reaching Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl (Mexican legend about volcanoes).

New York Fashion Week it's pretty much over... and there were few highlights. For me New York is where all the new talents are emerging, thanks specially to the CFDA but just as they come they go. I've heard once that nowadays fashion designers are not much designers but stylists, and New York Fashion Week is the best example, there is not that much designers doing a particular style or something that it's fresh, interesting and unique.

Heavy names in New York like Thakoon, Philip Lim, Marc Jacobs, Donna Karan, Diane Von Furstenberg, Max Azria and Zac Posen, are each season terribly similar to me, they have the most wearable vision in fashion, and they create great separates. In my opinion, they have nice basics that season after season are styled in a different way for the current fashion show, according to international trends.

Don't get me wrong I'm not saying that fashion brands have to be all crazy, crafty and have huge shows. But they do need a strong forward looking aesthethic, that you can recognize. I wouldn't buy a 600 dollars sweater that looks just like any other J.Crew or Banana Republic that retails in 100, which have great quality, as well as the designer's. This season in NY in my opinion the strongest were: Altuzarra, Proenza Schouler, Alexander Wang, Rodarte and Calvin Klein.

It was the second show for Joseph Altuzarra, and I think that he has portrayed what he can do for Fall with a dark lady-like but young (if that makes any sense) type of women, using mostly black and red, in total one color looks, I loved his red velvet, and having seams in the shoulders or cleavage almost completely open. I've never been a huge fan of Alexander Wang's work, however I must recognize that he was great transforming an urban trend into a signature look. This season he made the classic men pinstriped suit into all sorts of clothing, with an interesting result. Calvin Klein went for a minimal elegance that Francisco Costa is great with, and had nice options for working women, in a black, grey and white palette, without making it dull.

Proenza Schouler always aims a cool city girl and I think, Jack and Lazaro are relaxing for their second season on a row. They had a huge show portraying graffiti sprayed jeans, cool coats, one of the most amazing shoes of the season, and some minidresses with empire waists that I didn't particularly loved. Rodarte this season decided to tell the story of "maquiladora" workers in Juarez border of US and Mexico. Personally, I thought the show had more of a wild west side to it, some use of plaid and great knittings that seem to be old ladies tableclothes and blankets but look awesome as blouses, this may sound unpractical, and some of it totally was, but it also had the most quantity of wearable pieces, that any other. The show ended with heels that light up, and gorgeus white dresses under black lights, making them blue and Elvis Presley's "Blue Moon", gave me chils.

Shoes #4

I love how Stefano has taken Yves and making it a combination of upscale elegance with a more relaxed touch, making it wearable but not boring. Each piece looks cool on a whole outfit but it's also quite interesting on its own. Shoes for YSL have been also very nice, cause they manage to embody that characteristics of the brand, they are not shouting for attention, but once you see them closely they are pretty rad, and each season they are a must for all the fashion crowd.

The fashion season it's here, and it seems that it gets earlier every time, I'll be doing my top and summary once all the shows have been presented. It's gonna be weird not to have McQueen around, his two last collections were among the best of those seasons. Hope that the Fall one which has been said to be done, could be presented at some point, as a tribute and a opportunity for us to see his last work... :(

On another subject, I want to thank all the people that reads me, I never thought I would get this much views and viewers, you are beating my own mental record, and that makes me really happy.

Well now let's get to what this post it's really about, and that is the work of one of my favorite fashion photograpers, probably the number #1, Camilla Akrans. I really like her exterior photos. One of the things that makes me recognize her work are those crazy blue skies and intense colors, but they're always mixed with a nice softness and what I guess could be grainy and bright filters.

I first saw her work for Número a really long time ago, but she has done editorials for Vogue Nippon, China, Germany, and Harper's Bazaar, as well as campaigns for Sisley, ERES, H&M, Bebe and Jones New york. Lately I've been seeing alot more of work from her and I love it all. Here are a few pics from her, hope you enjoy. Her style fits San Valentine's perfect... it seems very romantic. Really sad news, I think you've heard, McQueen is dead. I'm writting because I think he was a genius and he deserves a nice tribute which I'll try to write, but I also don't believe it and kind of want it to be a really bad joke... It 's so weird, and so unexpected.

He had the craftmanship of any seventeen century couturier, but also the creativity of the most avant-garde twenty century designer. He had the hability to create the most classic pieces, with and extraordinary taste, but also the eagerness to get involved in new technologies and applying them to his process.

The Kate Moss hologram for Fall 2007 was groundbreaking, considering that the whole collection had an antique feel. His Spring collection 2010 and last one was also groundbreaking, by being streamed live in Nick Knight's SHOWstudio. How can we ever forget those giant robotic cameras moving along the runway following the models in their reptile-alienesque outfits.

We have lost a star in the industry, and a personal favorite of mine. Alexander could do no wrong, he will be missed, remembered, and I hope that his legacy remain with us for uncountable source of analysis and inspiration.

I never really like Dior clothing, it has been a little dull for a long time now. Couture is the only great show, but it also has a vintage feel and it's not really modern. However, I love the shoes! They are crazier every season, but I guess that the most outrageous ones, doesn't get to production, cause I have never really seen those crazy shoes on stores.

I haven't done this shoe posts in a while but hopefully I'll be doing them more frequently, Though I'm not that good at drawing I like to show you at least a little thing done by me...

Remember how Pucci, Versace, Gucci, McQueen and even Prada did crazy prints for Spring? Well I just came across this March Vogue UK editorial, that features Freja in an incredible styling by Lucinda Chambers. Sometimes this studio shots can be more interesting than editorials done in exteriors, specially when the clothes are a stronger focal point.

I'm so thankful for Spring, cause I don't think that last season we had this much clothes to work with, and such a wide range. Spring this year is full of colors, flowers, opticals, ladylikes, minimalism, cookines and darkness. I felt like last Fall we were just seeing the same Prada editorial over and over.

I don't like talking and getting to much into "trends" cause I'm no pro, and don't think that those kind of fashion analysis go with what I like to share with you. That is a 100% personal, and of course subjective point of view.

However, after the great return of Phoebe Philo with Celine, and I don't know maybe the turn of the decade, I have been loving the new minimalist aesthethic. I consider it to be fresh, clean, interesting, but also really feminine. Minimalism has come and go, some houses have stayed in that path, but a lot has changed since the old sleveless t-shirts and square cut mini skirts from 15 years ago. Now it's not about androginy at all!
Calvin Klein and Helmut Lang were the pioneers of minimalism back in the day.

So I guess I'm also doing for you a quick review of the Pre-fall collections, that we all now have to be a little less crazier than the ready to wear. Probably that's why I also found less embellished clothes. Either way, I love fashion and sometimes it can be a very powerful artform, but others it can become the most practical and utrilitarian thing in the world, managing at the same time to look great, and in that case, it's all fine.

Yeah I know it's just a child's book, but that girl is more fabulous that what normal people will be in their whole life. I recently remembered how much I loved her after seeing this photo...

Man, this is another fabulous girl, it's how Eloise would look like (in my head) at age thirteen and in year 2010.

In a total different subject, how's everybody liking couture? I honestly believe that we need more houses doing couture. Gucci is supposedly doing it but will be shown just by request to special customers, shame. The whole event needs more shows. Wouldn't it be awesome to see what other houses like Lanvin, Prada or Balenciaga could do in a couture show? Chanel this time was nice and Givenchy too, as usual. Tisci always does interesting stuff.

The fresh air of the couture season, was Thimister's comeback. Sometimes fashion keeps going forward faster than ever, and the talents once where young, disappear, and get somewhat forgotten. Thimister came back this season, though I read somewhere this wasn't actually couture, Style.com says it's couture but the fall 2010 collection. I'm a little confused after all, but let's not try to categorize it.

With the award season in full throttle I have been watching all the movies nominated or that have gained some recognition and I think are interesting, excepting those that I wanna wait to be released on theaters, cause Mexico takes months to launch them.

Last week I saw "An Education" and I'm so going to go watch it again on the big screen. It's totally lame when someone says that each frame of the movie is a picture, but it really is.

The best part is that it's not obvious at all, the photography doesn't tells the story completely, but just works perfectly with the script. The 60's are recreated incredible, I love the way the girls interact in school, cause it has an old school feel. Not to mention the trip to Paris, and the fabulous outfits the girls use. Carey Mulligan is gonna do great, I love her.

Sorry to make this post a critic but you gotta watch it if u haven't and tell me what you loved if you already did.

Another Styling

This one was inspired in the ocean, a lot of Spring collections were influenced by it, wether it was that fish-like prints at Proenza, the graphic patterns at Emilio Pucci, or the literal summer on the beach photos turned into prints on Prada. I thought of two look for going out 2 and 3 and two other two wear at the beach, that's 2 and 4.

So everybody watched the Golden Globes? Who was your favorite celebrity? Mine was definitely Diane Kruger in that degradé pink gown from Christian Lacroix.... Such a shame that the house is not producing anymore, hope they find a solution soon.

That what's the most exciting moment on my weekend, so moving on... In this past weeks all the major fashion houses started releasing their ads, some were featured on January issues, and some other on February ones, however, most of them are out. My favorites so far are the headless, I'm talking about Prada and Celine, and Gucci with gorgeous Natasha Poly, laying in that traslucide structure.

This season IMO, the ads were kind of lame, with these few exceptions. So I started researching for older ads, from a wealthier era of fashion, weren't these great? My favorite is that 2005 Miu Miu, I love anything with Selma Blair on it.

I just couldn't resist saying what's obvious... Haven't you noticed all those covers featuring the Gucci Spring 2010 collection? They are all from the same month! February was made for Gucci, and I'm glad cause I truly love the collection.

It's nice that great collections are embraced with enthusiasm and the recognition they deserve, it's a shame though that others that I love go by without much notice.

The Weight Issue

There has always been the debate about how fashion is aimed to the skinny people, and not to a wider range of women, which are normally bigger. There are also those who believe that due to current trends the silhouette on the runway and on print has become scary skinny, I don't agree. Models have always been this size... probably around size 2 or 4.

Suzy Parker and Dovima weren't bigger that, I don't know, Natasha Poly or Maria Carla Boscono, just using a random example here. The reality is that people in general used to be skinnier in the 1950's, my grandma for instance was a size 4 all her youth, and don't even get me started on that wasp waist, that every women had. The fattie of the group was probably a size 8 or 10 at it's biggest.

I also get that the way we live nowadays, creates more overweight among the population that it used to. I think that the normal range of sizes designer clothes are produced it's o.k. from 2 to 12-10. I don't think that any bigger one should be considered healthy, and one as a clothes producer should not encourage obesity by creating bigger sizes.

Yes I was inspired to say what I think because of the new V Magazine issue featuring larger models. Don't get me wrong I love Crystal Renn, but I don't like the idea of larger models making fierce editorials, cause that kind of stylings really look better on smaller models. However I support the idea, and if they could have done it in a more natural, what she really wears kind of way, would have been awesome.

A lot of things are in my head this week. It's like the coldest season in years in my city, and it's quite nice for a change. That's why the mood is a little less colorful. Just a bright red sun to keep it warm. 20+1 Movies of the decade

I'm a cinema lover. I try to see as much as possible, though I particularly enjoy old films, I gotta keep up as well with what's new and sometimes I'm also surprised. Narrowing it down it's hard but I, honestly, wasn't going to make a 100 movie list, because it's terribly boring for people to read and also harder for me to write. You have to watch whatever you haven't, and let me know which I'm missing or wether or not you agree.

20. 21 grams 2003
Alejandro González Iñárritu made thre films; Amores Perros, 21 grams, and Babel. All are a series of stories clashed into a film that while watching you discover what they have in common. This one was the first he did outside Mexico, and it's done with such a technic, that you are waiting eagerly what's next.

19. Le scaphandre et le papillon 2007
The real life of Elle's editor, which suffers from an accident, that leaves him only able to move his left eyelid, for communicating to the outside, since his mental faculties are perfect. The movie itself gives you a taste of what it would be like to be locked inside yourself.

18. Y tu mamá también. 2001
A mexican film with the two best actors that our land has given to world cinema, Diego and Gael. A roadtrip movie that compares the mexican point of view and "machismo" against aEuropean girl that joins them for the ride.

17. Borat 2006
Sacha Baron cohen is the man that always chooses the character that americans are afraid of and makes a parody out of it. Portraying what americans believe a gay or a middle east guy should be, giving as a result an acid comedy with an analysis of our own stupidity. Borat was the first one and the best.

16. Requiem for a dream 2000
The film with my favorite sequence ever. The story of a guy, his best friend. her girlfriend and her mother, and how all get messed up with drugs.The final sequence when the girl is in the club, the mom at the hospital, and the man on surgery is my fave!

15. The Royal Tenembauns 2001
A modern family that comes together because their dad is about to die. Each character has very particular characteristics, and they are all eccentrics, which makes the coexistance interesting. I love Anje and Gwyneth roles.

14. Match Point 2005
An essay about luck and destiny by Woody Allen, featuring: Scarlett Johansson, Matthew Goode and Jonathan Rhys Meyers. I was thrilled when I saw it, I specially love how they portray the British high society.

13. Almost Famous 2000
The film where I love how Kate Hudson works. I think she's gorgeous, but she just doesn't chooses the right films. The story about a bunch of unknown rockstars, and how the kid that travels with them manages to get an interview and write a piece for Rolling Stone.

12. Gran Torino 2008
A few day ago I watch this mexican movie called "El Estudiante" about an old man that goes to college and doesn't seem to fit with the "young". It's a complete bullshit. Instead Clint Eastwood had this great example of how the old generation of America, clashes with the new one. I went to the cinema for this one with my grandma 86 and her friend like 82, it was so nive to hear them talk about it over coffe afterwards.

11. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button 2008
Sometimes you go to the movies expecting to see a great fairytale, that makes you cry, laugh, and left the theather really inspired. This one was. All I'm gonna say is Tilda and Cate together in a film, must be the best experience ever!

10. Wall-E 2008
This decade the Pixar movei in my opinion is Wall-E. Set in a future where will be sitting on chairs plugged to a PC, living in outer space, and we'll all be to fat to walk. All I have to say is just wait and see, cause this sounds a lot more real than any Nostradamus prophecy.

9. Little Miss Sunshine 2006
Abigail Breslin was the child actor of the decade, sorry Dakota. I felt so identifyed with this movie, and with an uncle Ii have that is just as the father. The journey for the pageant becames an experience where they all realize that they are looser, but they have each other, and that's fine.

8. Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain 2001
A french tale, that happens to be done with an excellent taste, and that in my opinion started that 2000's trend where it was cool to be weird. The movie that pseudo-intelectuals refer to... for how they love to pop the plastic bubble paper, or have one of those annoying habits. Nevertheless, the movie itself is awesome.

7. Before Sunset 2004
This is the movie that I like to call; "Did it really lasted two hours?" It just feels like a 20 minutes chat with a friend. I love that it just involves two characters, who are meant to be together and have the greatest on screen chemistry I've ever seen.

6. Lost in Translation 2003
This was a little essay by sofia Coppola, that exploded like a bomb and won some Oscars, while Marie Antoinette her biggest film, was not received as expected. I love them both. But iI guess that I love this one more because of the cast, and because it doesn't has big pretentions.

5. Ying Xiong (Hero) 2002
In the early 2000's a lot of this kind of movies were huge in America, thanks to "Crouching Tigger, Hidden Dragon". But Hero was the one that manage to be perfect, a story told 4 times, each in different colors. I'm getting this goosebumps of excitement while writting just by remembering it.

4. La Mala Educación 2004
This was my favorite Almodovar movie of the decade. I love his darker and more dramatic stories, those really complicated characters, and how it features Gael which happens to be mexican, as a Sara Montiel drag.

3. Kill Bill Saga 2003-2004
Tarantino was at his best in this saga. It all happened in that colorful Tokyo that I'm in love with, in the American dessert, and the Mexican jungle, making it one of the best photographed pictures ever made. It reminds me of a very gorey anime.

2. Spirited Away 2001
Hayao Miyazaki can create the most fantastic worlds. This movie was the perfect example of that hability but also mixing it with his less complicated movies abouts kids (Totoro or Kiki's Delivery Service), making it sort of an intricate and gorgeously painted fairytale instead of a belic epic poem, or a cute kiddie flick.

1. The Dreamers 2003
I first watch this movie with my junior high friends, and it completely represents that stage of my life. An intense search of personal identity during yout, and the eagerness of being someone and rebel againts the grown ups.

0. Dogville/Manderlay 2003-2005
Lars Von Trier is my favorite director alive. I think that he has the sensibility to cover any aspect of human nature with a very intense and interesting depth. These two movies are also visually interesting by using very few resources, that's why I love them.

The second Spring styling.

This time Angel (who was born today) and I choose two different categories for making our images. Three looks for a working woman and three others for a girl in college. I tried to be risky and crazy but also a little bit more serious and polished. I'm not sure how it turned out but I kind of like it. And I also discovered that i'm not good making preppy.

This is for working women, just beautiful dresses with a jacket and for the third a more relaxed look but with a very interesting palette.

This are looks that look a lot younger and fresher, the first one is my attempt to do tons of layers, don't know if it would work for real, and the thir was my preppy interpretation.

Angel is a really important person for me cause I don't know anyone that knows as much about fashion as him, so we tend to have the longest conversations and discussions. I also admire that he doesn't likes to show off about how much he knows. I hate when people, specially in Mexico, wanna bragg in order to test yourself, kind of validating themselves and seeing if you know what they are talking about. People in Mexico seriously needs a reality check, not just in fashion but in all art-related careers.

The First 100

So here we go, it's been great for me to write this blog. I didn't think I could write as often as I do, and that it would be a project that I would keep. The blog is nothing more than my escape to fashion and all the beautiful things others can create. The post took me a few days, it was a bit of work but if I could spend hours researching about a topic, it would have to do with fashion.

The post 100 is what has inspired me the most this year. The collections I considered were Spring and Fall from 2009, since we don't get to see ad campaigns or editorials from the Spring 2010 collections.

This is what I want to do and enjoy doing, it has become an obsession, and I hope I could carry on writting and posting forever. Thanks to whoever is reading this, and shares the same interests as I do. It feels so great to make the review of a very important year from me, but I also can't wait for the new things to come. And possibly next year have this kind of summary in a 250 post or something.
It goes like this:

Impossible must-have of the year: A ring from Victoire de Castellane's new collection for Dior.

Victoire is genius, her jewelry is often over the top, but if people wont wear outrages clothes, the higest heels or a crazy purse, then why wouldn't you love to wear at least an excentric piece on your finger.

Cover of the year: Vogue US May 2009

I'm done with having celebrities on the cover of fashion magazines, that's a huge part of why models exist. They always do a much better work, and when I heard about this cover I was flipping. The issue itself was a challenge for me to get, because of the swine flu we didn't got that month of magazines, so Kevin mailed it for me. Thanks so much!

Campaign of the year: Prada Spring 2009

I just loved that in four different ads you could see the whole collection, a nice time saver, and a great option if u have troubles choosing what clothes will be on the ad. Plus the Meisel photo is well done, and I like that I don't recognize any girl in it. I'm always the worst with faces and models, so probably that's why, but they do look a like.

Shoe of the year: Nina Ricci's vertigo shoes from Fall 2009

There's not much to say, these shoes were everywhere on the magazines and they didn't even got made for retail, definitely an iconic piece, whish I could own a pair, wouldn't mind wearing them at all.

Muse of the year: Leonor Scherer

Leonor is one of those women that is impossible to overlook, her French charm is interesting and strong at the same time. Few women seem so interesting to me as Leonor, and it's really cool that she's getting some attention in the industry.

Model of the year: Eniko Mihalik

It was hard for me to just choose one model that was huge this year, but that I was also captivated by her. That girl is definitely Eniko. She has a huge appeal, is kind of sexier and has a nicer figure, not that skinny. She has appeared in every magazine vith great editorials, though it's a Vogue Paris favorite, and in advertising has appeared on MaxMara, H&M, Cesare Paciotti and Gucci.

Voguette of the year: Anna dello Russo

Anna was photographed in every streetstyle blog this year. She is as far as I know Fashion Director at Large and Creative Consultant of Vogue Nippon. She does styling in the magazine and has made her career as a stylist in others.
Her work in Vogue Nippon in editorials is awesome, and I personally love the way she dresses. Some people thinks that she doesn't has a personal style and that she is just a show-off. In my opinion, I think she loves fashion firsthand, few people gets to wear what's on the runway, and she is one of them. I think that she does it because she loves it and not because she wants to be on the spotlight. For me; that's personal style.

Designer of the year: Rodarte

There's not much too say that I haven't said before. This year I was crazy about Rodarte, they are the best new designers, their almost couture quality makes them exceptional. I also love that they are happy making fashion in the US but I would love to see them on Paris soon, and perhaps designing some big house, I just can't get enough of them.

Collection of Spring 09: Balmain

It was the most influential of the season. Worn everywhere and photographed in every magazine and editorial, this is the collection that started it all... All the big trends of 2009, rock, distressed skinny jeans, glittery tops, mini dresses, 80's revival, big shoulders. I am sure to say that inditex will revisit it every year until 2015. And when it came out it was definitely cool and i felt for Decarnin I must admit.

Collection of Fall 09: Prada

Prada marked the whole mood of the season in her collection. However, Prada choose to go on a different path, not choosing the classics of the brand, or making things as wearable as possible but to take the austerity feel that the crisis bring as an inspiration for making clothes with interesting cuts and shapes and get rid of embelishments.

Historic Collection: Nina Ricci Fall 2009

This one will go down in fashion history. The last collection that Olivier Theyskens directed for Nina Ricci was a lesson in ready-to-wear meets fashion extravaganza. Besides the wonderfully executed clothes, the collection itself was a powerful story of strong women meeting the natural feminity and romance that Olivier loves. The palette was dark with some touches of very bright powerful colors. A nice statement when the rest several other fashion houses were beign boring because of the crisis, and decided to play it safe in order to be comerially succesfull.

Inspirational

Some of you may already know this, my muse in the whole wide world is Karen Elson. I love her not commercial appeal of beauty, her ultra white skin, her personal style, mixing a bit of grunge and a very feminine elegance.

Even when I knew nothing about fashion, Karen always interested me in those Yves Saint Laurent and Jean Paul Gaultie ads. So when I knew who she was, she became my favorite... I know what I like when I see it and I rarely change my mind, so she still is.

I won't say anything about Karen's career because she has done it all, she's been in the industry for about 10 years, has appeared in all the major magazines and done tones of ad campaigns. I always get so excited when I see her in Vogue, or hear she's gonna be starring in a new ad. She's now doing the new YSL's Opium ad.

Spring in full swing

The first styling of the season. I don't know if it's a little early, because I do wanna start when magazines start publishing the current collections, but we talked about Demi, and after a little consideration here it is. I'm writting this just when it's time to wear my cozy knits and leather jackets together in Cuernavaca, let's hope it stays that way.

Now I have to do an extensive collections review so I don't run out of material for making up stylings. As usual, here the theme was nonexistent, just random clothes I would love to see together.

The Money Shot

I can't remember when was the last time I posted photos. Last week I helped my sister with a photography assignment she had. As usual we make it involved with fashion. She took the pictures, but Hugo was there coaching here and helping her, so I like to think it was a group work. That is in my opinion how you can achieve greater things, it's nice to have different ideas.

The styling is mine and my sister's, some of my expressions are kind of weird, but the pictures turned out really well. She actually printed them... and it may seem strange, but this are the first printed pics that I have of myself, done with a nice camera, I mean.

I am getting closer to the 100 post, expect something nice... cause I really wanna do something important.

Japan has the most stylish guys in the world

I am in love with cropped trousers, but honestly it's always a little hard for me to make them work. Somehow I never now what to wear on top to give a cool balance to the outfit. It came to me that Japanese guys wear them incredibly good. That's how I ended up doing my research in Tokyo streetstyle today. I saved tons of pics on my PC so I would say just what I liked most of each.

The first one is all about black in a trendy mood, a little Comme des Garcons, and Givenchy inspirations.

A group of cool kids. The outfits are perhaps more student like, and definitely more wearable, with a cookie detail, which is what I love to wear.

Another set of black outfits, but these have that long shirt-dress which I so would love to wear they manage tu butch it up with the jackets, and shoes... except the guy in the leopard purse.
